And one of them is our culture. “Give me liberty or give me death”. Doesn’t this suggest that living without our freedom is worse than death? There are many who value their honor and/or dignity more than their lives, and to be stripped of their honor and/or dignity, as they define it, could be considered a fate worse than death.
And, sadly, being raped, sodomized or tortured, or all of the above, might certainly be seen as stripping someone of their honor and/or dignity.
