I was wondering if any SDopers are fans of the band, “ELO”? If so, can you tell me if this CD is up to par with their older material? Is it a “must-have”, for my “ELO” collection? - Jinx
If you’re talking about last year’s Zoom I have it and enjoy it. It’s technically just Jeff Lynne but as I understand it he often played all the instruments, etc on a lot of previous ELO tracks so it sounds the same. I think if you go to Amazon you can hear samples of several tracks. If there’s a newer one than that I don’t have it yet, but I’ll be telling my husband it would make a great Xmas gift!
[SortaHijack]For anyone unfamilar with ELO and likes the music in the new Volkswagen commercial, you can’t go wrong with the album it comes from: Out of the Blue. Lots of great stuff; some you’ve probably already heard and liked, and a lot of undiscovered gems. I was enjoying my copy whilst I put up the Xmas tree this weekend! If you’re still not sure I’ll point out that you can probably pick up a vinyl copy at your local used record store for a few bucks.[/SortaHijack]
Thanks, voguevixen! Yep, it was “Zoom” I saw in the music store. I was surprised to see it. I really like ELO’s style. I’ll have to look into getting the Out of the Blue album. (Shame on me for not having a copy of this album in some format or another by now!) Was this a double-LP record? (Would it be a two-CD set?) I’ll have to shop and check it out on-line… Your DJ, Jinx!
Zoom was okay (and I’m obviously a big fan!). It beats the hell out the attrocious ELO Part II (damn you, Bev Bevan!).
Out of the Blue is a double-LP and is on a single CD.
I do recommend the Zoom live DVD. Absolutely killer!! Especially “Turn to Stone” and “Livin’ Thing”.
I saw ELO Live on thier time tour, back in nineteen hunert an eighty one…I still love that album.
If you want to hear ELO’s latest, listen to the new single by UK girl band Atomic Kitten “Be With You”. It lifts its chorus straight off ELO’s “Last Train To London”.
And when I say “straight” I mean it. No reinterpretation, no lyric change, no reinstrumentation; they dropped the needle in the middle of the ‘Discovery’ album and just started recording.
Sweeeet! More to add to my xmas list. Heh heh.
