If this ever happened (which it won’t) there will be an avalanche. Nobody in Illinois wants to be in Greater Chicago, and people in the real Florida don’t care about the bastards in Miami. Texas and Vermont would remain whole, every other state would fragmentize.

That it’s moronic as hell. We have had this same dumbass movement going on up in my neck of the woods (north WA/ID) but here they want to call it the state of Liberty and the prime spokesman is the right-wing terrorist named Matt Shea. It appears Greater Idaho and Liberty are competing for a lot of the same ground. Maybe they can have a dick waving (aka AR15) contest to settle who gets what.
Here is a recent opinion piece that was in our local paper yesterday that calls out how stupid these movements are:
First off, it absolutely is moronic, no argument from me on that point. But this effort differs significantly from the state of Liberty (or Jefferson, which is the southern OR/NorCal version) in that it’s a proposed border move, not a new state. Theoretically, it’s much easier to move borders than to create an entirely new government, add Senate seats, etc.
The counties that want to switch to ID are a significant net negative to the OR tax base, so I’m not sure they’ve really thought through the impact of moving to a state with even less funding than Oregon. They already have big problems paying for local and county services, and this would make it much worse. But at least they could shoot them a few more rascally wolves!
Yeah, it’s a slightly different approach, but still dumb as hell and not a snowball’s chance in hell of it happening. Liberty would also pull net negative portions of WA to form the state.

Haha, if they put this to a vote in actual Idaho it would go down in flames, screaming, since it would mean a shit ton of Idaho residents would lose their much higher paying jobs AND have to travel really far to get weed. They’d lose their tiny minds. Most every worker in Ontario OR lives in Idaho and there are WAY more dispensaries there than the modest population of Ontario could possibly support. When Hotbox Farms opened up their dispensary in Ontario and Snoop dropped in for an impromptu concert the 5000 in attendance all came from Idaho and the ID state cops were PISSED at the traffic it generated.
What we are seeing is urban vs rural. Rural wants to preserve their rural lifestyle. Urban likes buildings and crowds and people. Fundamentally different lifestyles. I think both are important but there needs to be respect and balance.
Counter Proposal
I suggest we round up all of the right wingers, conservatives and republicans and ship them down to Texas while simultaneously evacuating all of the left wingers, liberals, and democrats. Once the people transfer is complete we can appoint Trump to be Texas’ King for Life then build a wall around the entire state and kick them out of the USA for good.
- Texas finally gets to succeed from the US…with our blessings.
- The conservatives get to be as racist, bigoted, xenophobic, homophobic (etc.) as they want to be with no one around to complain.
- Conservatives will finally get their damn wall.
- Conservatives will finally get the racist immigration policy that they have been asking for since no one but a white, nutjob conservative will ever want to immigrate to New Texas.
- Conservatives get their preferred piece of shit to rule over them for the rest of their lives
- The rest of us get to not have to deal with the nutjob conservatives ever again.
It’s a win-win for everyone!

Not quite. In the West you are seeing a mix of things. Redneck libertarianism – a particularly western flavor of conservatism which is agrarian and ‘patriotic’ but not particularly religious – as against rural liberalism (organic farming, workers’ rights, etc.) has been a tension since the 1970’s. That’s why the Willamette Valley (liberal but rural/farming) isn’t part of the back to the mountains with our guns boys club. Educated cities from whence are issued those sissy laws controlling resource extraction are a big factor too, but not the only one.
By the way whatever happened to the State of Jefferson?
Shawn Vestal is a local treasure. The pessimist in me is waiting for him to move on. I know several people that have left the Spokesman in the last few years.
