Actual pratical advice:
it is possible to teach a dog to growl.
When The Perfect Dog and I were travelling, he barked everytime some one walked passes the hotel room door on the first night. Fortunately, the very next morning, someone at breakfast was bragging (in a nice way) about how their dog growled when someone walked past the door.
By the time I got to California, TPD was a growler instead of a barker. (He still barks at car doors and doorbells, but that’s his job.)
I think the licence plate is a hoot (assuming the culprit did not hit the dog).
In some parts of the world, people act a bit more civilized than others and treat their animal companions accordingly. I am the support staff for a couple of cats, because I know I am not responsible enough to own a dog. If I offended someone, somewhere by posting a recipe that I overheard. Grow some skin! There are people in this world who might have carried this out. I don’t know. I did keep chickens once and was overrun by mice in the feed shed. My ex, took her Fathers advice and mixed cement with flour in a bowl, next to a bowl of water. Rodent problem eliminated. Cruel? Damn right, negotiations had broken down, nuclear option was thought to be too radical. My chickens, wallet, and health were on one side of the scale. Ever heard of Hantavirus? I lost a calf to a pack of dogs, she was birthing and helpess, boom, boom boom. Next day, posters were on the school bulletin board, lost dog, have you seen black Lab, Irish Setter mix. Everything is relative to where you are, as we go for this wondrous ride around the Sun…

As a general rule, you shouldn’t suggest that animals or small children deserve pain or death, IMHO.
