To add numbers to an existing contact, enter ‘edit’ mode by tapping the pencil icon in the top right corner. Then tap the green plus sign at the right of 'Phone" to add additional numbers. I think you are limited to 100 numbers per contact.
Can’t answer specifically, but I have had both Apple and Android smartphones. Never a Samsung, but they look great so I’m jealous (stuck on an ancient iPhone 4 since that what my employer provides me.)
I’d take a bold step and try plugging your new phone into your PC. Should have come with probably a micro USB cord, right? See what happens. My last android phone did just fine just plugging in. I’ve also plugged my iPhone in to my work computer (which does not allow me to install iTunes) but I could still transfer files (though I had to click a pop-up on the phone: ‘trust this computer?’ first.)
The one that came with the phone should be fine, but be careful, some cords can be used for data transfer while others will only recharge your battery but don’t support data transfer.
Which cell phone provider do you have? Some will load their own bits and bobbles on top of the standard Android OS. When you’re first getting started you might want to stick to the provider’s website for your basic how-to steps. Once you’ve got a feel for your provider-induced peculiarities (and what version of Android has trickled down to you) then it’s easier to get help from the provider-agnostic sites.
If your phone didn’t come loaded with an antivirus program, it would definitely be a good idea to install one. I use the paid version of Avast for my PC and bundled my mobile device into the plan.
If you can’t just add numbers (I’ve never had a problem and I have the same phone, but they do vary sometimes) you could try “link contacts.” That is, enter the extra phone number as a new contact and then link it to the old one. To do this, go to contacts, click on the contact you want to link, click on the bottom-right-hand button, click on “link contact” then choose the one you want to link it to. Takes less time than it took me to type this. You can also link email, Facebook, etc, contacts this way.
The phone comes with embedded software to connect it to a computer and save contacts and the like, but most USB cables should allow you to use use your computer to recognise the phone as an external hard drive and copy over photos, music and so on that way. I prefer that to the proprietary software because it’s a bit hard to navigate.
The USB cable that came with your phone should be a data cable. You’ll know it’s working because you’ll see a three-pronged pitchfork looking thing on the top header menu. If you swipe down the menu, the icon will say “Connected as a …”
next to it. If you touch this, it gives you options to connect as a Media Device or Camera.
Normally I found I rarely have to synch anything using the data cable. Maybe just photos and videos. Most other stuff can be synched over wifi through the cloud. Apps are downloaded through Google Play, either on the phone or on a PC and pushed to your phone. Contacts are synched through a Google mail account (and/or facebook, Yahoo, LinkedIn, etc…you can select which ones).
All in all, I find it to be a pretty good phone.
Maybe your phone is in Simple Mode. Pull down the top bar and tap the cog to go into options. Then look for Home Screen Mode. There should be two options, Standard and Easy.
It would also help to know what Android version you’re running. That should be in options under About Device somewhere.
You can use a program called Kies to do backups, updates etc. It’s available free from Samsung here.
It soes the job, but when you get more experience, you will probably hate it’s bloated, slow-loading guts and move on to other programs for each function.
