Morocco is our next trip destination so I’d like to learn some basic functional Arabic. I have wireless headphones hooked to a computer at work all day, but visually I’m busy.
What audio resources exist (free or otherwise) would you recommend for a basic course in tourist Arabic?
Moroccan Arabic is a different language from other forms of Arabic, and mutual intelligibility between Moroccan and the others is quite poor. If you want to learn Modern Standard Arabic, but also speak to regular people in everyday life, you will be learning two languages at the same time. It’s like wanting to learn Latin to go to Latin America. Sure, there will be plenty of scholars and clergy there who could speak Latin with you, but learning Spanish or Portuguese is an altogether different affair.
I highly recommend Pimsleur’s Arabic as it uses repetition and it sounds out the words perfectly for comprehension.
That said, take note of what Johanna said about the regionalities of Arabic. I was able to get by in Egypt with mine. From what I heard, MSA (Modern Standard Arabic) can be understood by the listener, but your reply might not come in MSA.
Take a little time to learn the alphabet. It’s pretty easy to do, and it’s always nice to be able to read the signs in places you visit. Just be aware that some writing is going to remain incomprehensible to the novice as Arabic calligraphy is a fine art and as such can be highly stylized.
Seconded. I’m Arabic and can barely understand the Moroccan accent and dialect. You’re much better off with French, and you won’t have to learn an entire new alphabet to boot.
