So i'm high. Now I need a "stoned" playlist. What songs do you recommend?

monster104, vl_mungo did have a sublime song first on his playlist. So now you can be happy.

I guess one question would be, though, are you looking for songs about getting high or looking for songs to listen to when high. My impression from the OP was that it was the latter. Big difference in my mind. Yes, Jonathan Edwards “Lay around the Shanty” or whatever the real title is, is a lot of fun to listen to, but there’s other music that is experienced at a different level when in an altered state. Of course this is all from memory of days gone by…

“Love Reign O’er Me” by the Who, for instance.

Drugs are bad and harmful, and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Now try:

Orbital.
Dr. Didj.
The Orb.
Dark Side of the Moon.

And for a real aural orgasm:

Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, incredibly loud, on headphones.

RTFirefly - I agree that it’s not just because of the “Where were you while we were getting high?” part. That’s a factor, to be sure, but it’s sung in the persona of an all too wise self-destructive drug user speaking to the “responsible one” that they know. Very cool in the era of Nirvana, to be a smart burnout who knows what they’re doing and doesn’t flinch.

Add to that the water sound at the beginning which is really amazing when stoned, and the trippy imagery (“Slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannonball”, “A champagne supernova in the sky”) and you’ve got yourself a genuine piece of 90’s stoner culture.

Moody Blues , The Question
Neil Young, After the goldrush
Grand Funk Railroad, I’m your captain
The Doors, when the musics over and The End
Guns n roses, estranged

You are correct. That is the greatest electronic song I have ever heard. Thanks so much for recommending it (even if I am not stoned).

Your impression is correct.

And this thread received way more answers than I expected (though, in retrospective, I’m not surprised. Most people are eager to share their favorite author, band, movie and whatnot.)

But that’s good, I’ll try to get as many as possible of these songs. I probably won’t like some, but I might discover some artists that I actually like even when I’m not intoxicated. (which is, I assure you, most of the time :P)

So, thank you all for your collaboration. One of these days, I am confident I will muster enough willpower and determination to actually make an organized list of all the entries. Hopefully, before I get high again.

Another bizarre Texas artist:

Jandek.

Heheh…

Preach it, robgruver. You should hear the recording I have of DJ Tiesto mixing live in Amsterdam a couple of years ago (side note: imagine a rave in Amsterdam. Could we get more drug-soaked?). He spins that track, and when the big breakdown hits and her voice is left alone, the crowd stays dead silent, totally entranced. Then, as soon as those huge chords hit, there is this wonderful exulted cheer… I get goosebumps absolutely every time I hear it.

So that this post isn’t a total hijack, I will make a recommendation. This is for when you are really, unbelievably, incredibly stoned. First, send all of us some of whatever you just smoked. Then try listening to Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works Volume II. Close your eyes and see how long you can take it. Lucki accepts no responsibility if you blow your mind and leave your job and family to start a new and exceedingly stupid religion.
