A friend here has his daughter going to school in Minnesota right now, doing a year as a high-school exchange student. I wonder how she feels right now.
It’s so cold you can see a dog’s farts.
(I mean that literally.)
It’s 73 degrees F here. But I’ve spent the last 10 minutes with ice on my arm, so I know a little bit about what you mean. It’s hard to type with a frozen arm!
The only good thing about the bitter cold is that it kills off terrifying insects like palmetto bugs and scorpions. That is the one reason I haven’t moved south yet.
That’s cold!
That’s really cold!
Cold that can kill you in minutes versus rats and huge gross bugs and scorpions and Africanized killer bees - I’ll take the cold, frankly.
I went to college for 4 years in Minnesota. You haven’t really lived until you’ve experienced the inside of your nose rhythmically freezing and thawing as you breathe, your eyelashes freezing together when your eyes water, and walking around outside at the point where the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales intersect. At least a couple of times every winter we’d get warning emails from the dean of students, the gist of which was “No one should be outside for longer than 10 minutes at a time today for any reason.” Long underwear, lots of layers, and neck warmers were critical.
I moved to LA in August, and people here start bitching and shivering if it’s below 60 and mildly breezy. Highly amusing. I had the freaking A/C on as recently as 2 weeks ago.
I hate to sound like a Christmas card; but when it’s -30 (as it is now), and I’ve got a fire going, and the cats are napping in front of the fire, it’s not so bad.
Of course, I have to go out tomorrow, and the car will be cold, and I’ll have to be bundled up with hat, scarf, mitts, and so on.
But right now, all is well with the world.
Then hear them hit the ground.
Last Wednesday at this time it was -37 C. Today it’s +2 and going up to 9.
That is wild and whacky stuff.
Hey! A fellow Edmontonian! Lovely weather we’re having, isn’t it?
We beat the historical high for today at 6AM WTF.
My real complaint is that it’s going away tomorrow, we’ll be seasonal tomorrow and continuing to drop quickly into too fucking cold for this time of year by the weekend.
It’s like we had a chinook!
Well with the winter we’re having, you just have to wait a couple of days and it’ll be plus 7 and sunny! It makes the drops down to -25 slightly more tolerable.
Stay warm!
I’d think this would be a terribly difficult time to be a tree.
Are you Barbara Walters?
Ahahahaha. When C and F intersect, I have my winter coat and a pair of mitts. Boots if there’s snow on the ground, and if the wind is too fierce, I’ll put on a toque instead of just using the hood of my coat.
Long underwear and layers are only for the poor suckers who have to shovel the driveway or walk.
My parents were locked in the -40 C 40 below F stuff in Thunder Bay last week. People here (Vancouver) were complaining about minus 4. Everyone was using timid little scrapers while I had the big expandable brush with a scraping end that means business. I’ve lived out here before, but it is new to my husband. He doesn’t drive so is reliant on transit, and he had no problems getting to and from work.
He has decided he is never going back east again. He declared it, triumphantly. I said “Never say Never.”
But his brother is getting married in Barrie in August, and we will go. But only because it is August.
You know there are other places in the world you can live, right?
It got up to 80 today, but it was really weird and creepy.
Still miss Houston, huh?
Yesterday and today, the people I’ve been staying with in Edmonton have had furnace troubles. As in, not working. I first noticed yesterday morning - I woke up and went to use the exercise bike. En route, I thought “It’s chilly in here; it must be a cold day outside.” I gave the thermostat a poke on the way past - it was set for 19, but the thermometer was reading 17. Hmm, thought I. When I bumped it up, it was set for 20, but still no sound or heat. I just figured it must have something to do with the master thermostat and energy settings, and the like. Nope!
Floaty Gimpy, Canadjun - I owe you both a PM. This show has been way too busy!! I’m waiting to hear about an audition for next week, but other than that - anybody game for coffee/lunch?
