You have to be fucking nuts to drive one of those boats.
Where do I apply? ![]()
MAS*H City Rockers You could do a lot worse with your life. The CG is a great service IMHO.

That’s the guy. I knew he was well known in the PNW, but I didn’t realize he was a CG legend. I think I only met him once at some kind of formal dinner part we had.
So is there an update? How’d the meeting go? (meeting with a recruiter?)
As you have a bachelor’s degree, you ever think about OCS? (Officer Candidate School) The military will send officers to grad school. I’m assuming this applies to all services.
If this is off-topic, please smack me, but what happens if anyone with a college degree chooses to enlist in the military? I assume they go though basic, but after that? Do they really do much more fighting? What about the guys who end up being lawyers and such?
I can only speak for the CG, but we see a lot of people these days who enlist with a degree. Usually it’s a 2 year degree, but a 4 year degree isn’t that odd either. The reasons are varied. Sometimes it’s for the GI Bill to continue their education; sometimes they can’t find a job in their chosen field; sometimes they want some action and excitement before they live out the rest of their lives behind some desk in some office; and sometimes they just change their minds as to what they really want to do with their lives. Aside from having a greater chance at acceptance to OCS should they apply, they go about their enlistment the same as everyone else.
I’m not sure what you mean by this. CG lawyers are generally lawyers first who decided to join the military through a Direct Commissioning program. (DCO - direct commission officer) These are the officers who have highly specialized skills which easily transfer to the service. Examples would be: lawyers, engineers, maritime academy grads, pilots, etc.
You sound a lot like me right before I joined the Army. I had a degree, was in my mid-late twenties, and just couldn’t figure out how to point my life in the right direction. Joining the Army turned out to be a great decision for me, and I’m very proud of my service. Plus, it did indeed turn my life in the direction of my dream job, which I now have, and I make nice money, too.
My general feeling is that if you’ve long had a hankering for military service, you should absolutely do it.
Wow, I must say, I am honored that someone is keeping tabs on me. I don’t get that often, and I thank you.
To address the OCS idea first: One, it is my understanding that this is not an option for Army Reserve. Correct me if I am wrong. Two, if I do this I want to come out with extensive hand-on technical computer knowledge, and I thought OCS was more managing less doing. I hate being in charge, I’m too nice
Anyway, on Wednesday I scored in the 98th percentile on the ASVAB and the recruiter about tripped over himself doing the paperwork (I think they get a bonus or something for signing up high scorers). I qualified for 20k in bonuses and reserved a spot as a 25B (IT Specialist) at the rank of E-4. My date to leave for basic at Fort Benning was set for March 22nd. I was excited.
Then I told my parents. After a few hours of screaming at me for throwing my life away etc, I managed to talk them down to a 6 month delay in me joining instead of never. They won’t disown me if I wait at least 6 months before actually joining. I think they are hoping I will change my mind. I know, I am 23 years old and technically they can’t ‘make’ me not join. As much as I want to get this underway, well… they aren’t exactly bad parents so I hate to burn any bridges I don’t have to.
I’ll try to bring them around, but for now I had to turn down $20,000 and the one MOS I was specifically interested in
Ah well, I’m working on my pushups in the meantime.
Of course, I am open to all advice, critisisms, etc. I feel sort of awkward since this is slightly hijacking someone elses thread, so if you guys see this as a problem, PMs are fine.
Well, in the interest of keeping this on topic, I’ll point out that the CG has ITs.
Your parents would probably rest a bit easier as well. However, in the interest of full disclosure, the CG isn’t exactly on the cutting edge of technology; the DOD services have all the really cool gizmos.
How about you, MAS*H City Rockers, any update?
