Sounds like the two New Zealand girls who killed one of their’s mother. They were also very intrigued by fiction and, eventually, one became a writer. In that case, I don’t think the issue was that one or both of them were sociopaths. Rather, they were so obsessively bonded to one another, that the threat of being separated was enough to drive them to kill.
But I can’t think of what a 12 year old girl could do to two other girls that might prompt a similar reaction. Perhaps she knew something about them that they feared she might tell others.
Of course. And when I examine cases of pedophilia and notice that there’s a common theme of perpetrators acting when they are stressed, because they were fired, a parent died, they were dumped, etc., I’m not actually analyzing the case, I’m just looking for ways to blame employers, parents, and romantic partners. Or if I discover that there’s a relationship between poverty and your chance of being murdered, then obviously I’m relishing this quirk of nature, such that I choose to bring it to my lips and utter it. How foolish those poor people. They should have known better than to have earnings at the low end of the curve.
Motiveless crimes are things like hit-and-run car strikes, hobo beating, etc. The reasons for something might be stupid, but I’d be impressed if they took a year plotting to kill their friend, having simply picked her name out of a hat.
Certainly it’s not the victim’s fault, but determining if there was some reason they thought the victim, in specific, was the one that should be stabbed could shed light on exactly how crazy and in what way they are.
While in neither case is the victim at fault for the crime committed against them, there’s a bit of a difference between picking someone at random, killing them because they fucked your wife, and killing them because you thought they wanted to paint the bananas orange.
All of this, yes. It’s just incomprehensible. It’s a faceless entity that brings destruction - especially to children (hint, you two - you’re 12) - and does not speak or interact with anyone (sane), at least in anything I’ve read.
And on the topic of Marble Hornets, the guys are wrapping up their final season, just completed their “fund the DVD/BluRay boxed set” Kickstarter that went crazy and funded their next short project, as well as are in the midst of dealing with the Hollywood movie based out of MH (and featuring character actor Doug Jones as Slendy)… so yeah, this is probably not good timing for a couple little budding sociopaths to be blaming that 'Net ghost story.
Sure there is. There’s the risk that “Internet horror story brought to the big screen” turns into “sheesh, Hollywood is milking the story of those little psycho girls? (even though it was in production long before that)”.
I realize my particular anecdote does not equal a trend, but …
I have hung around SDMB for over a decade, which I think is a sign of knowing how to associate with the smart folks (this community is the best, you guys!). I browse reddit occasionally. I am familiar with cheezburger. My two early-twenties children keep me somewhat apprised of what’s hip and happening, sort of. I know what doge is. I can pick Grumpy Cat out of a lineup. I can relate to certain Advice Animals. I can find my way around many of the most-traveled corners of the internet.
This thread is the first time I have seen the term “creepypasta.” I have heard of Slender Man, although I know nothing about him except he’s supposed to be scary in some way. But the creepypasta genre? Never heard of it. I also am unfamiliar with pretty much everything to do with Japanese internet trends or memes in languages other than English - which likely puts me in a group with the majority of American internet users.
The internet is so vast and diverse, there are many many many parts of it that are familiar and second nature to those that spend time there. It also means many parts of it are totally unknown to those who haven’t yet crossed paths with those genres. I don’t think it means those folks are “totally out of touch.”
On the other hand, I am 50. I am probably so far out of touch I don’t even know it.
The enormity of the crime has everything to do with it. Murder (or attempted murder) is an adult crime far, far more serious than petty theft. 12 year olds are presumably old enough to know the difference between right and wrong, and the juvenile justice system is a slap on the wrist compared to the adult justice system.
But we don’t know all the ins and outs of the case yet. These girls might end up in a mental hospital, who knows.
I’m normally a hammer dropping fool but I find this whole thing just sad for some reason. 12 is too young to be tried as an adult, I don’t care what they did. If you are going to go that young and still prosecute them as adults then why have the juvenile/adult distinction at all? If a person is “binned” as a juvenile or adult based not on their age but on their actions it’s meaningless. Does this mean that a 25yr old man should be tried as a juvenile if his infraction is immature? Like if he shits on the library steps or something? That’s immature and juvenile but he’s 25 so he’s an adult.
They should definitely face stiff punishment, but I think people underestimate how absorbed/brainwashed kids can get when they imerse themselves in something. It doesn’t excuse it at all, but it’s not beyond the realm of reason that they worked themselves into a mental clusterfuck over the year.
Remember moonies? I swear to christ I thought they were really going to try to snatch me while walking around my neighborhood as a 9-11 year old. I walked around with a pocketknife for months because I had convinced myself of that. I also wouldn’t sleep with a mirror in my bedroom because of bloody mary. It was all real to me.
I know both those sites, but the question is more where does one organically come across creepypasta? (I assume most people are not strolling through a directory of memes to keep up to date on each one.) It seems like the answer is something called “/b/” judging by the responses.
How did you ever figure out I was posting from pound-me-in-the-ass prison?
Look, kids perpetrate tragedies all the fucking time. When it comes to sentencing, there’s gotta be a line somewhere. Either it’s at 18, as society has previously decided, or it’s completely meaningless.
I remember a case where a 5 year old took a gun to school and killed a classmate. Should we have charged that kid as an adult, too?
Exactly my thoughts. They literally don’t have a sufficient level of cranial development to make adult decisions. Trying them as adults is just an excuse to fulfill some prosecutor’s twisted revenge-fantasy. It’s disgusting.
They had enough “cranial development” to plan, not one , but three different senarios to kill this girl. Why would they not have the “cranial development” to face the punishment for it?
They knew it was wrong, they knew there was chance to get punished for it, they did it anyway and have no remorse about doing it. It is not like this was an accident or a crime of passion, they planned for months to kill thier friend and even revised the plan to account for forensic countermeasures to make the body disposal and escape easier, these are adult decisions and they made them.
