Just wanted to say goodbye, sorta. I used to hang out here on most days, keeping the SD on in the background at work. The network people just blocked it, listing it as Humor, Mature (boy, are they off base). I don’t have much time at home to surf, so I’ll be just a ghost around here anymore. I really enjoyed my short time here, and feel like I know some of you personally.
There’s ways around those netweork blocks. Some Doper with a personal site could put up a redirect link that would send you here, but your network would think you were connected to another site, for instance.
No, because when you click a google link, the browser address bar changes to the new URL. If you do a DOS netstat you’ll see you are now connected to the IP address of the straightdope server. You need a redirect that will show the contents of the desired website without changing the IP address your local machine is connected to. The easiest way to do this is through htaccess (on UNIX servers), but there are other ways as well. I could come up with something easily enough.
IIRC, somebody here long ago found www.straightdope.com blocked at work, but could still see boards.straightdope.com. It’s worth a try, unless you’ll get in trouble for it.
