My cousin works at a TJ Maxx, and just yesterday his boss collapsed on the job. He had to do CPR on them and had to call an ambulance. They didn’t end up making it. He seemed pretty shaken, so I’ve been comforting him.
Got my third jury summons in 14 months. The first I was dismissed with everyone else, there were no cases. The second resulted in a plea bargain, I was dismissed with others. After getting the third, I added a note to the response about getting summons so close together. Someone responded back that I had asked for 2 deferrals. I called the court house, the person I talked to said the same thing. I told them they were wrong and I have all the correspondence to prove it. She said it was considered a deferral because I asked for accommodations due to a medical condition, I never asked for a deferral. I asked for proof I asked for a deferral. She hung up on me. I made copies of everything and I’m taking to to the court house next Monday. This makes 7 jury summons in 24 years, I know many people that have received one.
Isn’t that discrimination? Treating you adversely because of a medical-based reasonable accommodation?
I don’t think “civic duty” is considered adverse treatment. That said, if it’s a deferral, that should be clear from the get-go. Sounds like shenanigans to fill the jury pool to me.
It absolutely is. “Civil duty” is a complete euphemism when it’s something you’re compelled to do under penalty of law. At least, where I live if you ignore a jury summons you can be charged with a misdemeanor. This is targeting someone because of a medical disability.
Last night my husband and I went out to eat at a nice restaurant. And, as happens almost every time now, there was one rambunctious table of people ruining the experience for everyone. It was someone’s birthday
, which I guess means they get a free pass to shriek with laughter, holler their conversations, and make a spectacle of themselves.
The waiters at other tables were constantly apologizing, and some folks did get moved to another room. Our waiter said management had already asked the offenders to tone it down a couple times, to no avail.
This used to happen now and then, but seems to have become an unavoidable part of eating out these days. I wonder if it’s because we’re in a college town, or what has changed to make people so rude.
The waiter also mentioned that the noisemakers tossed out an apology as they left, as though that made up for anything. In other words, they were aware they were being assholes. WTF?
ARGH! GoComics has been down for probably about 36 hours by now. Two days without my morning comics!
My tragedy as well… and on a Sunday, yet!
And the staff there apparently don’t work weekends. No response on Twitter or Facebook.
I haz a sad, and it’s worse than two days without comics. Bill Maher signed off for the season last Friday, and will not be back until Jan 20 (which begins his 21st season on HBO). Pretty sure that tonight’s John Oliver is also the last show of the season, and that slacker doesn’t usually return until sometime in February! I’m going to be comedy-deprived for months, at least deprived of biting comedy related to current events. ![]()
Facbook Again
Last week, a friend posted that if he had a time machine, he would go back in time and give a caveman a Fanta because that’s all he could think of. I commented “If I had a time machine, I would go back and shoot my grandfather when he was a boy. I don’t really have anything againts my grandfather, I’m just VERY curious to see what would happen” The friend and at least one other replied with their views on temporal paradoxes. I fogrot about it. Friday, I left to spend the weekend at my girlfriend’s. Tonight, I arrived home to an automated message on FB. My comment violates their community standards and rules against violence. I clicked the button saying I dispute the ruling. There was no space to enter an explanation.
That’s the problem, it’s also the case when reporting a post. The whole site is run by robots, and robots can’t read explanations.
It’s like calling a customer service line and having no way to press 0 to talk to a real person.
I’m going to be comedy-deprived for months
Stop by the MPSIMS and we’ll tell you some jokes. Or Pit, where we’ll just read you some news and you can laugh at those idiots.
I actually get my comic fix from reading a master dissect them, very snarkily.
Josh IS the Comics Curmudgeon.
It’s a little like getting your daily news by watching Colbert and Oliver, or Jost and Che. But it’s a lot more fun.
Or try Comics Kingdom.
eta: Just checked out Comics Curmudgeon, and the strips he has fun with today and yesterday are SO not funny… oh, well, scroll down to “Older Posts”, but watch out… I’ve gone through a dozen of those instead of getting sleep.
I will be so happy when the GA election is over. Somehow I got on a Democratic fundraising list (I may have sent someone a token amount sometime back, I don’t remember).
In penance, I’m getting 4-5 emails a day asking for money. It’s nice that Biden, Schiff, Schumer, and Warnock all know who I am, but enough already.
It’s a Tradition. Someone had to post it.
It helps people cook. Faster.
Now, I’m not going to win any friends with this.
< looks around >
Not a lot of friends on right now anyway; most took the day off.
It’s Thanksgiving.
So here you go. ( And You’re Welcome.)
We usually listen to it on the drive to Grandma’s house.
A friend was going to come by yesterday to spend Thanksgiving with me. Tuesday evening she calls to let me know that she might not be coming because her vertigo has come back, and she might not be able to drive. Sometimes her “spells” only last for a few hours, but sometimes they persist for several days. Yesterday she called to confirmed that it didn’t look likely that she would be able to come over.
We’ve been trying to get together for a few months, and every time some health issue has come up to prevent it. (And before anyone suggests it, she’s not making excuses not to come over; every time it happens she’s obviously upset about it.) It’s like some malevolent force is trying to keep us from getting together.
The only good thing about this is that since our Thanksgiving plans fell through, I decided to have DoorDash deliver two McRibs to my house for dinner.
Looking for a job in the Sacramento area that apparently doesn’t give a damn if you actually do the work you’re being paid to do? You’d fit in great at FedEx. They have a history of lying about delivery attempts that never happened, and otherwise screw up to the point that it’s about 50/50 whether a package will actually reach me at the correct address in a sane length of time.
Today’s was really fun. I guess the driver was feeling quite lazy today. Instead of delivering packages to me and to three of my fellow tenants at their actual apartments, the total of six packages were simply dropped in front of the leasing office door. Two problems here:
The leasing office does not accept tenant deliveries (they did ten years ago when I moved in, but they no longer do so), and
Said leasing office was CLOSED today anyway.
I do not live in a wonderful part of town, so I consider it a minor miracle that my packages were sitting unmolested and unpirated in the pile. Bonus points for a photo of the package pile that was so lacking in context I couldn’t tell WHERE in a 200+ unit complex the picture was taken. Thankfully, a very nice neighbor said he’d seen the stack in the photo at the office, which was how I knew to look there. I do not know any of the other affected tenants, so could not advise them of where their items were. I hope everyone found everything.
My problematic back complained enough about my two bulky boxes as I was lugging them to my apartment at the other end of the complex from where they were dumped, I did not have the physical capacity to haul some even larger boxes to their proper destinations or I would have done so.
Are there any good shipping companies in the US? I’ve had problems with most of the major shipping companies. Usually it’s a problem with the delivery people (like the USPS person who couldn’t manage to bring a small package up to my apartment on the second floor, and instead left it precariously balanced on the stair railing on the first floor
). I had the worst problems with UPS when Target left my apartment number off of a shipment, and nothing at UPS worked. Creating an account didn’t work, I couldn’t get through on the phone, and when I finally did get to talk to someone, she didn’t seem to understand what an apartment number was. It was amazing that nothing in this company worked, and I don’t understand how an organization that’s this dysfunctional can stay in business. (Really most of my packages get here without problems, so thanks to all of the delivery people out there who are doing their jobs well!)
I’m guessing it depends on where you live and who your delivery people are. My personal experience with UPS/Fedex/USPS/DHL have been uniformly great.
I’ll DM you the next time I know of property for sale on my route so you can move here for good service.
