It wouldn’t be, if he hadn’t made himself the poster boy for the fight against illegal immigration. How many years did he spend on CNN spewing his rhetoric? He put himself up on a mighty high pedestal. And from the language he used on his show, I would have expected him to be out there every day verifying the status of everyone that came on his property.
And to the question of a cab driver, I’d say no, don’t need to check the validity of each driver. But if you’ve hired a car service, then yes.
Lou Dobbs of all people should have made damn sure he didn’t hire contractors using illegals. And now we get to laugh at him for it.
Frankly, it’s fun to see people build themselves up to such high moral standards, and then fall.
No, but he would if he contracted that restaurant to do something for him. There are a lot of easy interactions with illegals that he can claim ignorance (like restaurants), but this was a company he directly contracted with. Now we all get to have a good laugh, and he looks like an idiot when he tries to talk tough about immigration.
It normally would not be his job, but he has made it clear the expects a very high level of due diligence on this issue by others, to the point that he expects that people hiring contractors ARE supposed to be checking this stuff. In the end it was just a rhetorical point for him. In his everyday life he (like almost everyone else) didn’t bother with it.
