So much for music college...

I’m listening to the local classical music station (background music - they play ‘pop classical’. The announcer says the next piece is “Puffin’ Billy” by Edmund White(or something like that) about a train on the Isle of Wight. Okay, sounds like a nice piece, I’m thinking something akin to Percy Grainger or a lighter Holst piece.

Nah, sounds more like Leroy Anderson (all perky and staccato, lots of octave jumps). Pop classical, definitely not Kurt Weill, but damn it sounds familiar. Halfway through the piece, it finally hits me…

It’s the theme to “Captain Kangaroo”.

And way in the back of my mind, I knew that “Puffin’ Billy” was the theme to “CK”, just like the William Tell Overture was the theme to “The Lone Ranger”.

7 years of music school (I have a Master’s Degree[sup]TM[/sup]!), and I can’t recognize a tv theme song.

I’ll be damned. The Captain Kangaroo song is an actual musical piece? I never ever knew that. Don’t feel so bad, screech-owl, your professional anguish has led to the enlightenment of a fellow Doper. Every cloud…
(Oh, by the way, I think I ran across Blackwell’s in New Castle last October. Whatta buncha rogues! Good beer though.)

Link for all you baby boomers out there.

You mean they’ve shaped up and gone respectable?! Always have good beer for your army - makes better gunpowder. Now if only I could remember the recipe for “Regimental Nasties”.
