My neighbor is apparently remodeling his entire house. He starts at 8 in the morning and goes all day, until about 9 at night. But only on weekends. At least he plays good music while he’s doing it.
So, last night, I got to bed at 2, after spending all day cooking for, then serving at, then cleaning up after a party. Sure enough, this morning at 8, he starts up some big ole power tool. Now, normally I am the Sleeping Beauty of sleepers (or the Rip van Winkle, but I don’t have a beard), but with a buzz buzz buzz in my ears, I can’t get to sleep.
Now I want a nap so badly I could weep. But for some reason, with the table saw going, I am like the Princess and the Pea: earplugs don’t work, shutting all the windows and doors, bundling up under the covers – nothing helps. Maybe my very cells sense the saw’s buzz and it produces some chemical that keeps me awake.
I know ou sais ear plugs don’t work, but for me they will at least block out enough noise so I can sleep. Additionally the sound of my breathing being rhythmic seems to accelerate the process. I managed to sleep through small children being goven toy band instruments to play with. I occaisonaly woke up but was able to drift back to sleep.
Hoep somehting works, nothing worse than desperatly needing sleep and can’t fall asleep.
It might be worth a call to the cops to see if your community has noise regs in place. I know here in Evanston you can only work 8-5 M-Fri and 8-12 IIRC on Sat.
Thanks for the suggestions. I got hopped up on caffeine instead of napping and watched Mean Girls, so instead of wasting my day in bed, I wasted it on the couch with an uneven movie and excellent tea.
I can’t call the cops about a table saw; I call them all the time because of barking dogs and I don’t want to dilute my power by making me into “that crazy lady who calls about crazy stuff,” instead of “that nice girl who calls on the non-emergency line when that mean dog is barking.”
Why not just go round and ask him to not use the power tools in the morning? If he’s remodelling, then there’s plenty else for him to do. Point out that you get to bed at 02:00, and being woken at 08:00 isn’t helpful.
