So much for warm weather stopping it.

Ecuador is pretty warm, right?

This is yet more misinformation – there’s a growing list of it coming from ‘experts’ and it’s killing people. Shit, the Deep South has had very mild weather and it’s spreading like wildfire there. Just straight up bullshit, like the advice not to wear masks, like saying it can’t spread past 6 feet. People need to stop thinking this is a normal cold-like or flu-like virus.

The only reason that this virus might slow down in warmer weather is not really because of the weather; it’s because there might be fewer opportunities for people to meet and trade germs. That’s it. That’s the reason. But MERS is a coronavirus and it originated in fucking Saudi Arabia.

People have this need to feel good and to be positive. Just, stop. Deal with reality.

Quito, Ecuador is currently 60F and raining. The week has predicted highs in the 67-70F range.

Quito and Guayaquil are drastically different environments. Guayaquil is at sea level on the equator, Quito is at 10,000’…

It’s doing just fine here in Panama. 1,475 cases and 37 deaths in the 24 days since the first case.

I don’t remember anyone promising warm weather would help. I only remember some hope in that direction. So I don’t know what “misinformation” you’re talking about, asahi.

It was certainly reasonable to hypothesize that COVID-19 would follow the patterns of many other respiratory viruses and drop over summer months.

As to Ecuador’s numbers somehow disproving that hypothesis - they do not. In fact, normalized to population and charted on a log scale with origin a 1 death/1 million population, Ecuador is having a relatively lighter take off than most countries and states. Which does not prove the hypothesis either.

Well, there was this.

Seriously? WTF?

It’s in the low 90s and humid in Guayaquil.

Down here in the Southern Hemisphere this is, ironically, good news. We are heading to winter, and it seems we do not have to expect that the colder weather will make things worse.

The city he noted is the capital and the biggest. It’s also over 9000’ above sea level.

That’s nice. The OP is about the situation in Guayaquil.

Well, if you are talking about Trump’s assertion yeah…he’s an idiot. But it’s not like this is made up. SOME viruses do fair worse in warm weather, once summer hits. Of course, then they generally move to the part of the globe thingy we live on that is in winter, which is why we get successive waves. But warm weather isn’t exactly a silver bullet that kills all virus as soon as it happens (despite what the idiot Trump implied)…and it doesn’t work the same for all viruses.

I think in this thread there is just a ton of ignorance that seems to be, again, about political point scoring. I get it. Trump is an idiot, and the Republicans are evil. And Trump’s statement was ignorant AND stupid, which takes a real talent. But the warm weather thing is not bullshit, though perhaps in the case of this outbreak we just won’t catch any breaks, and we are basically fucked until either an effective vaccine is developed, tested and given to something like 80% of the population, or until between 60-80% of the population gets and recovers from the thing…which will leave a fucking huge number of dead.

So, there you go…you win the point score! Way to go man, you sure told us!

I would tell you who said that, but there’s no politics in this forum. Use your imagination.

Lol, yeah. Focused on the wrong detail.

A family member of mine is an ex-pat in Cuenca, Ecuador which is also nowhere near Guayaquil but she has been very aware of the situation there through local news for a few days. She was vacationing in Argentina when everything started going down and made it back into Ecuador within a matter of hours before the borders were all closed. It sounds horrifying.

For those keeping score, the number of times I mentioned Trump=0, the number of times you mentioned Trump=4.

Moderator Warning

Whatever the political implications of the OP, you made it far more political. As you note, the temperature thing is not bullshit. If you felt the OP was trying to score political points, you should have reported it instead of going on an over-the-top rant yourself. This is an official warning.

NewScientist article from a couple of days ago.

I had a lengthly discussion today with somebody who, among other things, thought that warm weather would stop it.

He seemed willing to listen to contrary evidence. But that particular bit of misinformation is certainly out there. (The person in question didn’t get it on the internet or the TV, either; he’s Old Order.)
