So now my neighborhood has an enforced quarantine

Police nailed the sign up today, across the street 20 yards from my front door. Right under the rooftop where I eat breakfast.

Couple just moved in last week, wife just returned from working in Hong Kong. Yesterday, police and an ambulance came and got her. No symptoms or positive test, but she’s home and will have to stay in for two weeks. Twice a day, the health department will come and check for symptoms.

I have no idea what connections she had that made her suspect. At last count, there are 33 confirmed cases in the Philippines, all in stable condition.

What does that mean for YOU though? Can you leave your home? Leave the block? Got to the closest store?

Can delivery services enter the area? Are the Chinese couple allowed to receive deliveries?

( … and, erm, did you mean for this to go to MPSIMS instead?)

It would have been helpful if the OP had specified they lived in the Philippines at the start of the post rather than imply it at the very end, IMO.

And yeah: what does the sign say? Is it just the couple who are quarantined or is it the whole neighborhood?

His location says Cebu, Philippines, like yours says Las Vegas.

It doesn’t if one is a guest.

You’re both guests, so that’s not it.

Actually, it’s which theme you use to view the board. SultanTheme shows location along with join date, Straight Dope theme does not.

So it is a valid criticism that you shouldn’t assume everyone knows your location when you post a location-specific thing.

Back to OP: how locked down is this enforced quarantine? 24-hour curfew? Shoot on sight? Ask for a hall pass?

Couple years back, one of California’s historically biggest and baddest wildfires burnt nearby. Mandatory evacuation zone line was about 500 feet as the crow flies, 1/2 mile if the crow has to walk and push a flat tire. (That’s an old joke.) We were packed and ready to run at any moment but the moment never came.

We’ve not seen any QUARANTINE notices in our rural mountain area. If one appeared, we’d maybe escape in the little RV. But that raises (not begs) the question:
How close must a quarantine be before you flee or self-quarantine yourself?

The sign is advisory, to notify the general public that the physical residence is under quarantine. I don’t think any law restricts the movement or activities of anyone other than the quarantined occupants. The neighborhood is unaffected, there is freedom of movement and activity. How food is brought in, etc. I have no knowledge, but since a health monitor will visit twice a day, I am sure arrangements have been made for grocery delivery, etc.

As for me, my life is unaffected in any way, and at the present level, life will go on normally for everyone except the quarantined occupants, who are Philiipino, but the wife had just returned from overseas work in Hong Kong (as I understand it – I do not know them personally – didn’t even know the vacant house was reoccupied)… If she develops into an active case of Corona, the level of quarantine may be escalated, I do not know.

I’m guessing it’s the “Hong Kong” part. Any news of other people being rounded up if they’ve newly-arrived from China?

This sounds like the kind of thing the authorities used to do when kids had measles, scarlet fever, diphtheria, etc. I’ve seen pictures of houses with a big QUARANTINE sign nailed by the front door.

Only the family was quarantined, and sometimes it was just the sick child confined to their bedroom and visitors were limited.

Exactly. The town traffic cop came over on his motorcycle and put up the sign when my sister or I got a childhood disease, which every kid got at least three of.

Well, everything is fine so far, no confirmed cases

Wife’s sister and mother moved from Manila to their house in the provinces, to flee from the crowded city’s risk. As soon as they got there, the police put them under quarantine, because they came from Manila.
