… what exactly is Steelo doing behind those pieces of red wood?

I used to think he had a DVD player without a cover on it and he was spinning the DVDs with his fingers, but at 5400rpm (or 7200rpm) wouldn’t he have to spin the DVD dozens and dozens of times to back up the video just one second? He appears to be moving his fingers just a couple inches (and sometimes not even that much).

These days I wonder if that little box just for show.

If it’s what I think you’re talking about, it’s just a cdj controller. The turntable looking thing is not actually connected to the actual spinning media. It’s just an interface that allows you to jog, queue, pause and scratch as if it were a turntable. They’re pretty fun to play with.
