They run an inn in Vermont.
That’s not news; they’ve run an inn on their estate for quite some time.
Mid-90s-ish, a cousin held his wedding there. It was a very fun affair; the reception was essentially a catered cookout.
Looking at this, and the other thread that was around recently (which linked to a Wikipedia article)…I had no idea the von Trapp family was real. I remember the movie from when I was little, of course; it was one of my mother’s favourites (not surprising, since she grew up in a musical family as well). But I haven’t seen it since childhood, and I thought it was just a good story.
The Trapp Family Lodge has been a VT tradition since the 50’s. It’s common knowledge in New England, and they have a fairly large national and international following. It’s not surprising that they are not as well known outside of New England.
Their cross country ski trails are quite excellent.
Well, the real Maria von Trapp is supposed to have said, on being asked how she enjoyed “The Sound of Music”, that while it was a very good story, it was not her story…
Several of the daughters came to Hawaii at one point to teach music at the Catholic schools here. Both my mom and her older sister had them as their music teachers. Well, my mother only had the youngest daughter born to Maria. When the movie came out she took the class to see it.
They run the only inn in Vermont without a mechanical ski lift. When the guests ask how they’re supposed to get to the top, they are told, “Climb every mountain…”
I seem to recall a blurb in the paper a few years back about a law suit among the children over the assets of their parents. I don’t recall the details, though.
Tris
The real Maria does make a cameo appearence in The Sound of Music.
One of the Von Trapps is a singer and does performances around here every so often (and, I imagine, other places as well).
I’ll take this oportunity to say that as a musical theater guy who lives in VT, I am so sick of The Sound of Music. There’s one theater company here that does that show every year. Tourists eat it up, but the show gets old really quickly.
That’s Elizabeth, a granddaughter of Maria and Baron von Trapp.
My parents used to own a time share up there, back in the mid-80s. Nice place.
Sunspace, I just explained to a friend last week that the movie was based on the real family, and he was totally blown away - he’d had no idea, either.
Well! I guess that brings us back to D’oh! :smack:
Are any of the Captain’s seven children from his first marriage alive? How about the children from his marriage to Maria?
The Von Trapp Lodge website shows that 3 of the children from the first marriage and all three from the captain and Maria’s marriage were alive as of 2005. (2005 is the page copyright date, I didn’t see any other dates)
Thanks, Antinor01.
