Glad to see I’m not the only one who clicked on.
I’m not complaining though.
So, are we all sharing a common hallucination, or did the board not go down for the weekend after all?
I expected it to be down by now. What gives? Or is someone merely meddling with our minds, here, hmm?
I’m assuming until told otherwise that they’re gonna shut this thing down sometime soon, but I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to sneak in a few last posts in GD and MPSIMS this morning before they pull the plug on us.
Sometimes the preliminaries for these things take longer than expected, and I’m sure that when Jerry & Co. roll up their sleeves and actually get to business, they want to be sure they know exactly what they need to do. I’m all for letting them take their time so they can get it as right as possible.
Good luck, y’all!
Yay! After it reopens I might finally be able to get on during the day!
And I’m glad they decided not to wipe out all the 1999 threads after all.
Oh, goodie, there’s still time for me to explain to all the English teachers out there what the “carmel covered crack” remark probably meant (if I may).
There is a sizeable proportion of the populace that consistently refers to “caramel” as “carmel”. I refer you to any county fair in the United States, where there is bound to be at least one food vendor selling “Carmel Corn”.
And “crack” is of course a notoriously addictive substance.
So “carmel covered crack” would be an extremely sweet and tasty addictive substance.
Like the SDMB.
Which still seems to be up, BTW…
tick… tick… tick…
Maybe Jerry decided to “have a life” this weekend instead?
I’m still in the process of building the read-only archive server. Probably will take me most of the day. There is a chance that the SDMB will go down for a few hours today while I get a good snapshot of the database. The maintenance is not going to require the amount of downtime I envisioned earlier in the week. Of course, I could always screw up completely and the SDMB could be down for months!
You rock!
:screech:
Jeez, Jerry, don’t scare me like that.
And they are wrong, the same as the sizeable proportion of the populace who use there when they mean they’re or their.
I see misspelled signs all the time. What’s your point?
I understood what you were trying to say. It’s just that I understood it in spite of your error.
Please understand that I was grinning like the Mad Hatter when I wrote this. I need to have fun SOMEhow…
“In spite of my error?”
I didn’t say it–Biggirl did.
There are 12,600 Google hits for “carmel corn”, some of them from folks who’ve been selling the stuff for years.

And it’s Merriam-Webster’s pronunciation #1:
I submit that English is a flexible and ever-changing language; you can pronounce it “car-mull” or “care-uh-mull” or “care-uh-mell”, and they are all correct. And I further submit that how you pronounce it has to do with where you were born and raised.
[sub]And why am I able to post? Is it done?[/sub]
And I further submit that it makes sense to spell it the way you pronounce it.
Noah Webster probably kicked up quite a fuss, too, when he started spelling words like “colour” as “color”, and leaving out the “k” in “musick”, because that was how you pronounced it.
Sheesh! Jerry, if the board were a woman, I’d understand all this foreplay. Does it have to be “in the mood” to perform the actual act? Since you are a man, did you read the directions before you started building the server or are you still trying to fit “part A into part B.”
shhh sam we like Jerry. Jerry is fixing our server for us. We don’t want to distract Jerry or get him upset. Jerry good.
And I thought I was obsessive, DDG!
I like the way the board is running. Thanks Jerry.
Abby
I wish to bump to the discussion, in a most bumpety bump manner, that bumps must be bump.
I did not wish to bump the issue, but I feel very bumtious about it.
I don’t think we should go that far. Just to name a few words that are often misspelled because people spell them the way they are pronounced: Athletic (one which every one puts in an extra syllable because the extra syllable allows one to say it more easily)and library. Can’t come up with more at the moment. Perhaps others will. Also, there are a lot of words with unpronounced letters: often is the one often mispronounced. Even Rudy Mancke used to mispronounce it until lately. Someone must have cued him in.
Okay, I’ll grant you that.
“Nucular”.
