It doesn’t matter what the public thinks or what the left wants, the Republicans now have the power to just ride right over them.
As for the form it will take, it looks to me it’ll be like the North Korean regime. A deified leader, closed borders, and an obsession with racial/cultural purity and ferreting out dissenters.
It pretty much just has. America has just handed the government over to white nationalists.
This is discussion? Did you notice the title of the thread? The OP is being serious! This is hysterics.
Someone has to be the voice of reason. It obviously ain’t Der Trihs and the Op, who seem to think Republicans will ignore all laws (Trihs said exactly this)and start internment camps and, the logical extension of that line of thinking, mass executions and the 4th Reich. Because it is not that they have different opinions, see things differently, have a different idea for our direction, it is because they are EVIL and were just waiting for control of the presidency and house and senate so that they hoist the swastika while doing their evil villain laugh.
Only a Democrat in office could keep them at bay. They seem to forget that when we had internment camps, they were ordered by one of our greatest Democrats .
I am apprehensive about what the Donald will do, but I am going to wait till actually tries to do it, and actually looks like it will happen, before I start whining. Opposition is one thing. Hysterical demonization is another. It sucked when the Right did it, it sucks when we do it.
All of this. It’s a lot of hysteria and doom-saying without a lot of strategizing about how to respond to it. ‘‘Oh, we have to call it out before it happens.’’ Okay, so, you called it out. Now what? Think that’s going to make any difference? Think anybody’s going to listen to you if you open your argument with ''You’re a Nazi?"
I’m so tired of this pissing into the wind. Let’s make believe for a second that liberals are 100% in the right and Trump and his regime are 100% white supremacist evil.
Prognosticating a civil war or nuclear Holocaust will accomplish exactly what?
Who are we trying to convince?
What change are we trying to effect?
What’s the game plan?
Someone give me a coherent argument for how the ‘‘freaking out’’ strategy will help us avoid calamity. Bonus points if you can explain how demonizing all Trump voters as racist pieces of shit will help us avoid national disaster or improve conditions in any way for people of color.
Every historical event is just a little bit different than every other, but the lessons of history still have timeless validity. There is no basis for ever saying “it can’t happen here”, even if it does seem unlikely at any given time. Germany had safeguards and checks and balances, too. Hitler systematically dismantled them one by one. All it takes for very bad things to happen is a sea change in public opinion and a torrent of propaganda to sustain it.
If Chicken Little told you that the sky was falling,
Even if it wasn’t would you still come crawling back again?
I’ll bet you would, my friend. Again and again and again and again and again.
I am waiting until I see what happens with what I think will be the tipping point, as illustrated below:
Trump is very (VERY) thin-skinned. He takes an criticism personally, and he hates, HATES to be mocked. See for example, his threat to make it easier to sue newspapers, his crapping on the entire press gallery, his exhorting his rally crowds to intimidate the press and recently, his pathetic tweets against SNL and the play “Hamilton”.
I am going to see what happens in 2017 with media outlets, and in particular comedy shows and hosts who mock him. If, at the end of 2017, we see SNL and the late night comedians either shut down entirely, or cowed to the point that they stay away from mocking Trump…and if the media in general is constrained… And if the public is more or less accepting of this… Well then it’s all over.
I don’t rate Chicken Little’s perspectives in the philosophy of history nor the little fictitious fowl’s intellectual stature to be particularly noteworthy.
holds my index fingers next to my head like horns because I am the devil!!!
Shit if the Trump actually does pull the full Hitler they are coming for my fish belly white, Republican ass early. The government tracks me. They regularly send me and my fellow threats a newsletter. They have records of me signing an oath in opposition to any potential Fourth Reich. They have detailed records of me being trained to use violence. They have my DNA on file. Hell, I’m even a second generation immigrant from a culture with a long reputation for fighting…and drinking…I can’t forget the drinking even if it doesn’t apply here. Drinking, fighting, and drinking. I really like the drinking.
When they come for me will Der Trihs take up arms and fight? Will I be stuck fighting, and drinking, never forget the drinking, alone while he simply decries my evilness? Those are some serious questions. I don’t have time to contemplate them though. I must work on my evil cackle. Then I need to scheme some overly elaborate and impractical execution schemes. So much to do in the next two months.
I’m on record as saying Trump voters are stupid and/or racist, but I’ll clarify and say that my anger-driven comments were hyperbolic. Trump voters may have an average IQ as high as Clinton voters, for all I know, and it’s too facile to say they were driven primarily by racial bigotry. The causes of the electoral catastrophe were more complex than that. Many Trump voters were driven by frustration over their own inadequacies and lashed out in anger with their votes. This is sad and, sadly, there is no easy solution.
But many Trump voters were driven mainly by stupidity and ignorance. To see this we need look no farther than our very own The Other Waldo Pepper. I’ve taken the liberty of extracting from several of Mr. Pepper’s posts in this thread, because his sophomoric “lawbreakers are lawbreakers” tautology is so amusing.
I, for one, would like lawbreakers to be treated as lawbreakers. Let’s start with Donald J. Trump. He’s accused of several counts of sexual assault including forcible rape of a 13-year old girl. His “Trump University” was clearly and disgustingly fraudulent. (Have Trumpists offered their views on that?) In his business dealings he has frequently refused to pay legitimate bills, inviting his vendors to sue and knowing, like many “successful” businessmen, that expensive lawyers are a key path to wealth. We can be certain Trump is a serial lawbreaker even though he’s never been sent to penitentiary.
Yet Pepper, who explicitly acknowledges rape as a crime (this doesn’t go without saying when trying to fathom someone like Pepper), seems happy that this horrid man is now Sociopath-in-Chief. I’ve no idea what “lawbreakers” it refers to — perhaps the people who swam across the Rio Grande to join their children, and are now hardworking loyal Americans (unlike the Trump) who pay their taxes but cannot vote.
It is unfortunate that we don’t have a Great Deporter to deport immoral cretins like Pepper!
How do you figure? If you’re incorrectly assuming that I’m a Trump voter, then we need look no further than you for an example of stupidity and ignorance.
That’s odd; I’m not at all happy that Trump was elected. Possibly you’re ignorant? Possibly you’re quite stupid?
It’s unfortunate that you reached that conclusion; it seems immoral, and cretinous.
Because they’ve said again again how they want to persecute, oppress and kill people, and have done exactly that whenever they could. This isn’t about “different opinions”, this is about the bigotry, greed and malice which are the defining qualities of the Republicans. “Kill homosexuals” isn’t a “different opinion”.
At first when Trump was elected, I was embarrassed to be an American. Now, I’m embarrassed to be a liberal.
No, YOU study history. Germany did NOT have 200+ years of democracy. Instead, they had a shakey republican government, massive inflation (to the point that people were using bank notes as fuel instead of currency), and crippling war debt as well. There was great resentment over the Treaty of Versailles, and this was during the Great Depression too. (No, it didn’t just affect the US)
Remember that the Weimar Republic was only 15 years old, (and the German Empire before THAT only 50 years – prior to that, Germany had been a loose collection of independent states).
The world was a vastly different place in 1933 than it is in 2016.
People aren’t just “discussing” things – they’re freaking out and claiming we’re going to start building concentration camps. FFS, get a grip.
Trump is no more a fascist than Obama is a communist. He’s an asshole, and I find him disturbing. But calm the fuck down, people. If anything, falling down and wailing is only going to make things worse.
bwuh? Ok, Hawaii and Alaska were granted statehood in 1959, and yes Alaska is geographically large, but that still doesn’t make your statement compute. Please explain
I suspect Lord Feldon refers to the James Crow South, which was a pretty undemocratic place to live unless you were exactly the right type. If you were a white nigger-lover, you could have been in some serious trouble if you failed to keep a low profile.
