We’re talking about the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, right? I didn’t know they were making a movie of this. Never really read the comic. When’s this movie coming out?
Ohmygawd, this looks bad.
Look, one of the greatest moments in the original comic is when Hyde grabs Mina’s wrist and is about to tear her arm off, to which she says:
“Mr. Hyde, you are hurting my hand, sir, and I will not allow that. I should be grateful if you would release me.”
(panel of them staring at each other)
(Hyde lets go)
“Thank you.”
She stares down Mr Hyde!!
Of course, in the movie she’s a bloody vampire, so she could probably tear his arm off.
I’d read on aintitcool how much they were looking forward to it. The trailer was no good though. I’m kind of looking forward to it. I’m not a comic book fan in general. If I were never told it was a comic book movie, I wouldn’t know it.
Here’s the bad news. My friends who were with me (ie: the non-fan boys who will end up making or breaking the movie in the long run) all thought it looked like crap. In fact they all openly mocked it when we got it saying they thought it was going to be a parody.
That’s the exact feeling I got watching the trailer, especially with the car chase scene and the shot of them in the snow with the big fluffy white coats. And what’s with the use of green?
I’m one of those people who never collected the book. I read the first issue and found it to be a great idea, but it came out at the time I stoped collecting due to monetary issues, so I’m behind in the loop. From the issue I remember, there was Cpt. Nemo, Dr. Jekyl/Hyde, and the Invisible Man…I know there were more, but those are the only ones I can remember, and looking at the cover to one of the more recent stories, I can see the roster’s changed as well. Who were the original members, who are the current ones, and who’s being portrayed in the film (and how does Tom Sawyer fit into it?)? I got most of the characters, but who’s the “Immortal”?
Original characters (the League):
Dr. Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde
The Invisible Man
Allan Quartermain
Mina Murray (the former Mrs. Harker)
Captain Nemo
(and the villains)
Fu Manchu
Professor Moriarty
The movie version adds to the League:
Dorian Gray (the immortal)
Tom Sawyer (now a Pinkerton detective)
Both original villains are gone, having been replaced by:
The Fantom
I repeat: this looks really, really bad.
Incidentally, Tom Sawyer as a Pinkerton agent isn’t made up for the movie. Twain did, in fact, write a sequel called Tom Sawyer, Detective that establishes his future career.
I gotta admit, I’m not too keen on how Hyde looks, but the idea of putting Dorian Gray into it seems pretty cool. His was a story I always loved, so it seems pretty cool to see something else done with him.
The movie does look rather silly though.
I saw a trailer in the theatre yesterday for Daredevil that was one of the worst cases of “bad traileritis” I’ve ever seen:
Cut far too quick to get anything but a vague impression of people dressed strangely jumping around in what could have been fight scenes if the camera had been more than six feet away from the object in question.
I’m hoping Hollywood gets over the whole quick cut and in close fight scene fad and starts showing us what a talented stunt person can do in a well choreographed fight. I’m not going to action movies to watch music videos.
Glad I’m not the only one who had Avengers flashbacks.
