So, what do you consider a good happy hour?

2 for 1 beer? $3 PBRs?

Curious about what in your city you consider a good HH.

60 minutes and booze.

I’m not a bar person, but the local fave seems to be 3for1s.

Half price, and not just on well drinks or house beer/wine. Gotta have at least a few quality offerings, and half price on selected aps, too. And it has to be a reasonable time frame-- 4:30 - 6:30 is good. 7:00 is better.

I’m more concerned with the food than the drink. I like $3 microbrews, but if the happy hour menu sucks, it isn’t worth it.

$3 PBRs? Hell no. $2-$3 is the normal price for a PBR. 2 for 1 is fine. $3 microbrews would be good, too.

I’m pretty sure Happy Hours are illegal here in Illinois. That is, it’s illegal to change the price of a drink during a portion of a day. They can have food specials, like free munchies from 3-7 pm, but no drink specials unless they last all day.

Something about not encouraging binge drinking, I gather. Wussies!

My favorite is 2fers and half price rolls at my favorite Sushi joint.

Another is $2 40 oz beers with a free food buffet.

:D:D Thanks for that.

Just got back from New Orleans and sampled many a happy hour offer.

The best had to be the 50-cent oysters and 1/2 priced drinks at John Besh’s joint Lüke.

I think it’s illegal here in Alaska, from what I heard, a bar has to be able to offer a special sale price for at least a week.

There is probably a “real” reason for the law, but I always liked to imagine a whole bush village cinching up their dog sleds and making a 5 day trek to the bar because of the awesome deal on well drinks, only to be told the special ended the day before. Like the ultimate bait and switch.

It’s illegal in Illinois, so pretty much anything would be awesome.

It’s not really about binge drinking, but about curbing drinking and driving. Happy Hours encouraged people to drive to the bar after work and then drive home right when it was over as opposed to people going home and car pooling and/or walking to a bar later in the evening like they normally would. The point being that happy hours encouraged what might be otherwise responsible people into making irresponsible choices to save a couple bucks.

A few half priced apps of reasonable size.

5-7pm, none of this 4-six BS.

Some $3-5 cocktails (so probably $2 off or half price as well) that are non-wells. So beyond the scope of just “beer and wine”.

Decent crowd (not too stuck up, not a weird ambiance).

Non-crappy servers.

That has to be a recent change, because back in the Dark Ages (1970s) Mr. Whitekeys’ Fly-By Nightclub used to offer three-fers for Happy Hour. Their radio ads were tagged with “Just what sophisticated young Anchorage wants…a cheap drunk in the afternoon!”

Wow. I’m 36, and a drinker, and I never noticed. Holy shit. Where have I been?
