So, what do you do for a living?

I’m currently a meteorologist for a private company. I mainly do tailored forecasts for ship captains as they sail across the oceans, taking into account client concerns, vessel threshholds, and weather conditions. We also have provide weather/weather services for aviation, agricultural, energy, offshore oil, and mobile/cellphone interests.

Previously I worked at McDonald’s for six years (high school and college), got a B.S. in Meteorology, then worked as a civilian with the US Air Force doing meteorological satellite applications, such as tropical cyclone tracking/intensity estimates, volcanic ash tracking/forecasts, and dust/smoke tracking in areas with US interests (i.e. Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.), and satellite-based snow estimates. Best job I ever had, and still wish I was doing it sometimes.

Good lord, Monkey Chews! I think there’s a special place in heaven (or the afterlife of your choice) for folks like you.

As for me, I am the marketing and PR person for a specialized agriculture campus of large university. How a person with two degrees in theater ended up working at an ag. school is a long story.

Currently I work for the Conservation District in my county. Previously I’ve worked for the Federal Gov’t doing computer digitizing of soil surveys, a Certified Nurse’s Aid, waitress and retail. (the last two while I was in college).

I have a BS in Earth Science-Geography with a minor in Geology.

My current job is awesome. I use a lot of what I received my degree in, but also office management, financial stuff and education.

Graphic Design Manager

I design & print labels, supervise my one helper, babysit the salesmen, and surf Dope.

Well, I was going to say Administrative Coordinator for a clinical research network, but I just got a phone call.

I’m an IRB Analyst for a clinical research institution.

Woot!

I’m a research assistant at a cancer research center. Specifically, I keep track of medical errors, like when someone takes out the wrong lung. It’s mostly data entry.

Previously:
–bookstore bagger (temporary)
–passport maker (data entry)
–clerk at a yarn store
–bookkeeper/receptionist/person who does most everything at a garage
–Walmart stock person
–waitress
–babysitter (steady gigs)

I’ve also written two novels. But for now, this’ll pay the bills.

Technical writer for a large software company.

I ride herd on software documentation for developers. So my job is half writing up what-all the tools do under the covers, half what-all the tools look like on the surface, and half what-all language gets put in the actual bits.

Some days I’m prouder than punch of my job. Other days I want to unzip my skin and run around screaming. (applications of coffee and chocolate do a lot to fix the latter urge…)

I trained as a physicist and after university I went into research, but it was way to much like hard work and one needed to be much much smarter than I was.
So I slid into the oil and gas industry and worked in various roles (wellsite engineer, drilling engineer, log analyst, operations manager) around the world (Far East, Middle East, North Sea, Central Asia, Houston).
I reached a level where competency was no longer a required skill, only the ability to play politics and avoid a good backstabbing was needed to progress. I didn’t like / wasn’t any good at that so I went solo and joined a small group of consultants doing driling engineering, rig design, data analysis and failure investigations.
Moving from a large organisation to a very small one was quite a leap, but ultimatly it is a lot more satisfying working for ones self.

blondchap

I’m a Registered Nurse with Maternal/Child services at the 4th largest birthing center in CA with High Risk antepartum, labor and delivery and postpartum.
Never a dull moment and I love it. Not only healthy soccer moms have babies!

I always seem to have a few different things going. At the moment I get paid for:

[ul]
[li]In-house web design and computer support[/li][li]Free-lance web design (always looking for clients  )[/li][li]Playing piano (accompaniment or solo/group work)[/li][li]Notation/transcription[/li][li]Teaching (high school drama)[/li][li]Camp counselor (I’m 26 and still have the occasional ‘summer job’)[/li][/ul]

Sadly, with all of the above I still stretch a bit to make ends meet, but at least there’s variety, eh?

I grade nationally standardized writing tests and write articles and essays for professional publication. I currently write two articles each month for a regional publication devoted to parenting. I’m also trying to get a book on infertility together with a Reproductive Endocrinologist (doctor specializing in fertility treatment).
