Board shorts is pretty much all I wear in summer downunder, oh except the whole suit thing for work.
Nearly everyone I know from the ages of 5 to 50 would wear a pair of billabong, qiksilver, etc etc boardies. They should end at or around the knee and not be too tight. Colour and pattern is all about your age and body shape, my eldest son can wear ed hardys and look cool where as I have a pair of camo billabongs that are more my style.
For formal occasions a nice pair of cargoes again not too tight and finish around the knee somewhere.
You should not wear shorts while spamming.
