So what shortages are you personally seeing?

I try keep a can in the pantry so my husband can have it the 2x a year we have roasted turkey. It’s no rush to get another can; it won’t get used for months yet. It’s just odd there hasn’t been any of that variety for weeks while there’s tons of the jellied kind; I’m also afraid I’ll completely forget about it by the time he’ll want it.

Got it!

We have a running shopping list. We write down what we need/want and take that list to shop with and then use the list (it took us a long time to learn this part) and cross stuff off if/when we find it. When we get home we put the stuff we didn’t find on the next list. We does loves our lists.

It’s been several weeks since I could find diet grapefruit juice. They have every other kind of diet juice, but no grapefruit.

We have cultured buttermilk AND lard now. It’s been over a month for them. (I’m going to start making my own buttermilk now, that was a hard month.)

A friend posted a photo on Facebook of empty grocery shelves. We are still using InstaCart for groceries at Wegmans; we have not run into the “sometime this week when we feel like it” but that may be because we do store pickup versus having it delivered.

An article on shortages in general - as noted, it’s a combo of Covid, the weather, etc. (we’re also Northern Virginia).

An Amazon Fresh storefront opened up near here a few months ago. We finally visited it this past weekend because we had something to return to Amazon itself. My impression was a) Nothing really all that special on offer; I’d go here if I had something else to get at the same shopping center, and b) lots of empty space on the shelves. I suspect a lot of that is due to supply chain issues.

Pint sizes of dairy and dairy-adjacent stuff are scarce here right now. No pints of whipping cream, half and half, or the unsweetened coffee creamer I occasionally buy. Larger sizes seem to be OK.

Soy flour. Looking for it to try the Cornell Bread recipe somebody here posted about a while back. The recipe calls for full-fat soy flour.

Local health food stores can’t get it. Bob’s Red Mill took it off their website. Most of the listings on Amazon are either de-fatted or reviews say it is infested with insects. Other online listings are for 50 pound bags for commercial bakeries (apparently many baked goods contain it).

I once needed a small amount of chickpea flour. I ran dried chickpeas through a coffee/spice grinder repeatedly and it worked out. Is it possible to make soy flour?

I don’t know. Online listings tend to say something about ‘roasted’ or ‘toasted’.

I went to three different places (Safeway, CVS, Target) to try to find some Dove unscented deodorant, and the women’s deodorant shelves were about 3/4 empty in each. They were especially scant when it came to Dove brand. I managed to ferret out some slightly different unscented deodorant, but Dove is my favorite. I do see it on Amazon, but even that took a bit of sleuthing.

I believe Bob’s had to shut down for awhile in 20 or 21 due to the need to make the processing facility safer. If they’ve added more distance by shutting down lines, they might have stopped processing some products.

Bottled water (all brands) is pretty much wiped out here. Canned foods are starting to disappear again. The meat cases are a bit sparse, but I’m guessing this may be a weather-related supply chain issue. (Mom knows some people in the seafood department at the local Wegman’s; they’ve kept her updated on the status of the various delivery trucks.)

Fresh fruits and veggies seem to be fairly well stocked, considering the season.

Cat fud selection this afternoon was horrendous. Luckily, the few cans on the shelves were what I wanted. Skimpy supply of litter, too.

I think one of my local grocery stores is seeing a big enough shortage of employees that they are having trouble fulfilling pickup orders. I just placed an order and won’t be able to get it until Sunday - 4 days away. The other grocery in town I get stuff from (which is a much better employer) doesn’t seem to be having this issue, so I don’t think it’s an uptick in demand.

When I went shopping this morning the store was completely out of distilled water, which I need for my CPAP. They did have spring water, which is an acceptable temporary substitute, but instead of gallon jugs it was in containers with dispensing spigots which are a PITA to use to fill the water tank.

Just did a grocery pickup (we use InstaCart at Wegman’s, for curbside pickup) and got the distilled water.

No Diet Sprite bottles of any size - they didn’t even list the 16.7 ounce or 2-liter bottles on the website.

Other unobtainables: Celery. Cabbage (a head; we could have gotten a bag of pre-shredded stuff). Baby carrots. Heavy cream. Eggland’s Best eggs (housemate prefers, for some reason - I cannot tell the difference) - we got the store brand instead. Ground beef (the 90% lean) was not available - that’s been hit or miss anyway.

We did get the loaf of bread we’d ordered. I announced that the predicted snow this weekend was not likely to happen after all, or we wouldn’t have gotten any bread.

Weather permitting, I may hit Costco on Monday, at least for the baby carrots :D.

I take supplemental fiber in the form of psyllium fiber capsules daily, on the theory that my diet is low in fiber, and am finding it hard to find. Costco usually has it available in their brand but I haven’t seen it the last couple of times I was there.

I’ve noticed my supermarked did not have Metamucil (same thing), but I found it at BJ’s Wholesale, who had plenty.

Packaged salad greens. Much lower than usual stock and variety.

Missing from my curbside order today:

  • mini-peppers
  • grapes
  • Hippeas
  • our brand of breakfast sausages
  • Vegannaise
  • raspberries
  • turkey bacon
  • gluten-free lasagna noodles
  • Italian sausage meat
  • Just Egg (egg substitute)
  • Kind granola
