So what the heck is this pain in my knee?

Here’s the situation: Walking on level or uneven ground–no pain. Walking downhill–no pain. Walking uphill, sharp point pain at about the center of my kneecap. Pressure on kneecap with thumbs/fingers: no pain. Anybody else had this problem? Any suggestions?

Could be chondromalacia, but you’ll have to see an orthopedist who will get the required diagnostic studies to accurately diagnose your problem. First see your family physician.

Is that greek for “sharp pain in knee”? What is the treatment? Don’t these sorts of things require using a half-inch drill motor and a masonry bit to repair?

The progressive erosion of cartilage, common in the knee joint where it is known as chondromalacia patella.

Symptoms of chondromalacia in the knee joint include knee pain with hill climbing or stair climbing.

Could also be a torn meniscus. Go see an orthopedic surgeon. He or she will probably tell you in a few minutes what the problem is.

Mr. Ruby had knee pain that moved all around his knee and there did not seem to be any logic behind when it hurt. Last winter he had all the appropriate tests and the orthopaedic doc thought he had a torn meniscus (cartilage under the kneecap). He underwent surgery and the surgeon found a piece of cartilage under his kneecap the size and shape of a marble.

He surgeon said it likely started out as a small piece of cartilage that had broken off and over the years had literally rolled around getting larger like a snowball.

The surgeon was surprised that he could even still walk. He gave us lovely color photos, suitable for framing.

The moral of this long and rambling tale is to simply have your knee checked by an orthopaedic surgeon. We count on our knees to get us from Point A to Point B every day. Take good care of them and they’ll take good care of you.
