So what's there to do in Buffalo, NY?

What kind of music is it?

It’s celtic-inspired rock. I know that sounds weird, but it really is very good. And they are a great live band. You can hear a few songs at their website . But even if you don’t like the music, the concert is worth it for the cheap beer and people watching.

Albright-Knox. That was the art gallery I was thinking of.

I’d like to check out some of the architecture as well. Any place that has felt Olmsted’s touch has to have something going for it…

Oh, and Spirit of the West rocks.

Oh, if you’re going to be at the falls at night, you MUST go to the Canadian side and see them lit up. It is really gorgeous, and seeing them in the dark- standing next to the apex of the horseshoe falls- is just scary and exhilerating and wonderful. Now I want to go to the falls!

Getting into Canada is not a hassle- you should have your ID with you as well as your birth certificate. I’ve not been asked for mine, but they can require it of you to get across the borders if they want to. So if you have both, you should have no trouble at all. They just ask where you’re from, what you’re coming into Canada for (you just say visiting the falls or going to the casino or whatever) and they ask how long you’re staying for. Easy as can be.

On a very minor hijack, Opal: How difficult is it to learn to juggle? I got a “Klutz” book of juggling for my birthday and haven’t tried it yet. I have good hand/eye coordination and would like to learn, but haven’t had the time yet. Any other good resources you can recommend?

Well I don’t carry my birth certificate around with me so I guess I’ll be skipping the trip into Canada LOL. (I’m already in New Hampshire… not gonna drive 12 hours back to VA and 12 hours back just to get my birth certificate!)

Plnnr: The Klutz book is how I learned to juggle… and I was 11 at the time. It’s an excellent resource. Things to keep in mind are make sure you master the “scoop toss” before moving on to anything else, and make sure you keep your hands in that “plane” in front of you. Some people juggle by moving their hands forward and back in a sort of “beckoning” gesture and it just looks stupid.

Don’t forget about Mighty Taco! There’s nothing like some Mighty after a night of drinking.

Do they have vegetarian tacos?

Check the schedules for Nietzsche’s and
Mohawk Place. These two usually have pretty decent live music.

I visited Niagara Falls recently (as in less than a month ago). We walked across and a Driver’s liscense was all they requested in terms of ID. The lady on the Canadian side was much more welcoming than the men on the American side, although the fact that we walked across at 7 pm and returned at 10 pm may have been a factor. It costs 50 cents to cross the bridge from the Canadian side on foot. (I don’t know how much it costs to drive one’s car). They illuminate the falls starting at around 9:30 until midnight (if I recall correctly). Certainly the falls are more impressive when viewed from the Canadian side.

Heck, I’d try it without the birth certificate- that’s what they say that they CAN require, but I’ve not heard of anyone having to show it. License is usually fine, but just be aware that they can deny you entrance without a birth certificate, that’s all.

Slowly I turned…

Laughing Lagomorph, BS SUNY Buffalo

You mean you’re not coming just to drop your money into the new Casino my junior Senator helped set up since, of course, that’s the only way that such a benighted place as Buffalo could improve its cash flow?
Seriously, the falls are lovely, and if you don’t feel like driving up to Toronto, there’s a great park a little north of there where the Canucks beat the pants off some mean, nasty, imperialistic invaders from the south. It’s now a beautiful park: well tended, and with some spectacular sightseeing in its own right.

If you’re willing to drive a little further to the east there’s Letchworth State Park south of Rochester. Sometimes called ‘The Grand Canyon of the East.’ One of the first major parks, and is considered influential towards helping Teddy choose to begin the national parks. Also the site of a beautiful inn and resturant: The Glen Iris. Linkitylinklink Well worth the trip and the meal. I haven’t stayed there, so I can’t speak on the accomodations personally.

I don’t know if you are a vegan or not, but Mighty Taco does have bean and cheese tacos and burritos.

The Albright has already been mentioned, it is one of the best modern art collections in the country. It’s also a nice size – not too big – so you can see a lot of quality work in a relatively short amount of time.

Another neat museum type thing is the Karpeles Manuscript Museum, which has interesting stuff and is also free.

The best Frank Lloyd Wright house in the area is just south of the city, in Derby. It’s called Graycliff and was a summer home on Lake Erie. They offer daily tours that coordinate with the sunset, as the house is oriented so that the setting sun lights up the entire property (it lines up perfectly on the summer solstice). Anyway, that’s a nice thing to do in the evening.

I, personally, think the nightlife on Chippewa St. can be a lot of fun, BUT, I will say it is very geared toward the college crowd. I think it is good if you go with a big group, especially if you want dancing, but it is difficult to have a conversation. If you tell me what kind of bar you like, I could give you some suggestions.

I like goth stuff but I didn’t really bring any appropriate clothes for that lol. I like rock… classic rock, metal, 80s music… I don’t like country, rap, or hip hop. I won’t really know anyone so being able to have a conversation probably isn’t that important. Heh.
