And that is why we haven’t been more successful. We’ve been explaining facts and morality to people who are looking for an excuse to dismiss those things. Keeping brown people from voting is the purpose of these laws and it’s what they want.
It occurs to me that before worrying about 2020, the Democrats need to worry about what they will do after the 2018 midterms. In particular, at the rate we’re going, it’s probable that after the midterms there will be a Democratic House, a Republican Senate, and a severely weakened Trump still in the White House. At that point how they handle the impeachment question will probably be one of the main issues between the midterms and the 2020 election. Hopefully they will be able to find a way to handle the issue without losing the base or turning off moderates.
Voter ID is a solution in search of a problem. There are better ways to prevent voter fraud, such as actually verifying registrations before issuing cards.
I’d note however, that voter ID is pretty popular among minority voters as well, which is one reason our side flogs it so much and Democrats don’t dare to oppose it except in court.
So Democrats take the wuss way, passing laws that require voter ID and then resisting enforcement at all costs. But that way Democratic Congressmen and state legislators are never on record as being against voter ID. Slick.
Now of course recently Republicans have tried to pass voter ID laws that are obviously politically motivated and often racially motivated, which gives Democrats some cover. Just not enough cover to actually repeal existing voter ID laws, which most states have. Democrats expending political capital on a national effort to end voter ID would be disastrous for them. I can’t think of a fight I’d rather have as a Republican.
