I was reading the “Greedy Lawyers” thread on MPSIMS, which apparently resulted in peace getting banned for using dirty words. I think it was the f-word that got him/her banned, but other people used it and they didn’t get banned, so maybe I’m wrong. Then coldfire used the d-word to remind peace not to use the f-word. And I see people use the f-word in the Pit all the time, which I suppose makes sense because it is the Pit.
So I guess my question is, which words are allowed in which forums? I wasn’t really aware of any profanity rules recently; search results for the f-word on General Questions were over a page long. There are 874 occurrences of the s-word on GD. I thought maybe MPSIMS had special language rule but there seems to be cussing there to. I generally avoid the Carlin Seven anyway, but I’d like to know for sure.
Before the mods get here and give you a specific answer, I would like to point out that it seems that sometimes it has to do with context. If you call someone a fcking shithead in GQ or ATMB, that’s going to be a definite no-no. Now, if you’re in MPSIMS and you refer to your neighbor’s “stupid, gddmn dog” when telling a humorous story, it is more likely to be overlooked.
I think peace’s recent enforced departure ::pause for happy dance:: had to do with his behaviour over a period of time. If you read Lynn’s message in that thread, she was going to review his posts in all their glory. It was after that he was banned. I don’t think he was banned solely for the use of the wrong word in the wrong forum. There was a hell of a lot more to it than that.
Primaflora’s got it basically right. I looked over peace’s posts, noticed a pattern of bad behavior, and banned him. In particular, peace had a habit of ignoring or outright rebelling against warnings made by mods. Since he wouldn’t heed warnings, the only thing left to do was ban him.
Sure, use THAT in my Forum any day of the week. Fuck? Depends, I suppose. I’m not too anal about a curseword or two. Just don’t push your luck. The best thing to use is your common sense. It’s not that hard.
Yes, Coldfire, I was mostly kidding about the “d-word”. I say “mostly” kidding because I happen to get very paranoid every time somebody gets banned - the higher the post count, the more paranoid I get. I mean, peace got up a lot people’s noses; I really didn’t notice the same pattern you guys noticed, but then I’m not a moderator so I wasn’t really paying attention. If (s)he ignored what moderators said, then yeah, you pretty much had to ban him. I just wanted to get the rules straight on language.
It would be kind of cool to have an “Insults Yes, Profanity No” rule.
“You’re a darn dummyhead!”
“Don’t say “darn” around me, you nincompoop!”
“I’ll get you banned if you say “poop” again.”
“I didn’t say “poop”, you said “poop”.”
“NOBODY SAY “POOP” AGAIN OR I’LL PULL THE PIN ON THIS THING AND BAN US ALL!”
