I remember the first Marvel Card Series had stats for each of its characters including “Fights: Wins, Loses, Ties.” With all these past threads of Batman Vs X, it seems to be rather prominant that Batman always wins…
My question is, when has he lost? Or tied?
I was never a big fan of the Bat and never read many DC comics back when I collected, so the only person I can remember breaking Batman was Bane. He of course got his ass handed to him later by Azriel, but still…good ol’ Bruce did get his ass handed to him on at least one occassion. So, who else has kicked the Caped Crusader’s ass?
If you mean pre-Crisis, there was the Composite Superman, Joe Meach, plus some alien who revived Joe Meach, and then later assumed the powers himself, eventually changing his name to “Amalgamax”. (Hm. Was he related to Mercury of the Metal Men?)
For some reason Batman was not up to fighting someone with triple invulnerability (Supergirl’s, Mon-El’s and Ultra Boy’s), triple superspeed, triple superstrenghth, and at least 20 other super-powers of the 20 full-fledged Legionnaires as of 1964 – excluding Superboy but including honorary member Jimmy (Elastic Lad) Olsen. (The last had his statuette made later and given to Superboy as Superman, who placed it in the Superman Museum. For some reason Brainiac 5 decided that it would be really cool if the statuettes were miniature, non-living DUPLICATES of the team members. For some reason the idea that maybe someday you could make non-living DUPLICATES of people inflamed my 13 year old imagination. But I wasn’t interested in males posing for them OR miniatures. You get the idea. Anyway, when lightning strikes the figurine set in the presence of one very disgruntled maintenance worker and would-be daredevil who blamed Superman for aborting his career – You get the idea…)
Superman had to keep maneuvering to save Batman from being broken “like a doll”. There was nothing to pull out of a Utility belt in a case like that. Did I mention that CS had no physical weaknesses? Only a time limit – and that was not realzed by either CS nor the World’s Finest guys in the first encounter.)
Also, when Batman was surprised by 5 super villains including Bizarro and Reverse Flash in “Secret Society of Super-Villains” he of all the targets decided to pull a Bat-stunt to distract them, then escape until he could get help. A rare burst of realism in comics of that time. “There’s no way I can fight so many Villains at once” he remarks to himself. Sure, he would have to take Bizarro and Reverse Flash especially one-on-one.
Hey hey, no fair: he didn’t have any time to prepare!
In fact, that was pretty much Bane’s whole plan: keep Batman so busy that he didn’t have any time to prepare. Smart guy that Bane. Unfortunately, in the movies, big muscly guys must inevitably be incredibly stupid grunting monsters.
The OP is who hasn’t Batman beat, not who has beaten Batman. As far as I know, at least in current continuity, no one has defeated Batman more than once. He always comes back and beats them the next time around (and the next time, and the next time . . .).
And as for the person who brought up that the Joker comes back, well, if you’re gonna say that a villain coming back means Batman hasn’t really beaten him, then Batman has beaten hardly anyone. Batman’s kicked Joker’s ass on numerous occasions, so yeah, he’s beaten him.
As you’ve no doubt noticed, Batman does pretty well for himself when prepared. When facing a supposedly superior opponent whose abilities and weaknesses are unknown to him, he’s probably gonna lose at least in the short run, but he learns from the encounter and comes back ready to win the next time around.
So, the question is, who hasn’t Batman beaten? And I mean ever, not just characters who’ve beaten him once only to have him come back and whip their asses.
Well, there are lots of characters he’s never fought . . .
At some point, him and Shiva are going to have to come to blows. I still don’t think that it’s right that he basically just lets her get away with murder instead of trying to bring her down.
I don’t think it was a matter of Bane keeping Bats too busy to prepare. He could have launched a surprise attack (more than possible since he’d figured out Batman’s secret identity) and I think Bats could have beaten handily. In addition to being unprepared Batman was totally drained physically and mentally by having to fight all of his worst foes one after the other over the course of several nights with no time for rest.
Bane basically cheated because he knew there was no way he beat a Batman at the top of his game, prepared or no. Bane’s smart, but he’s cheap, he’s a chump, and he’s only beaten Batman just the once. He’s been batting zero ever since.
Well, he hasn’t beaten my mom. Of course they’ve never gotten into a fight, but if they ever did get into a knockdown, drag out contest he’d probably kick her ass. However, if it was a drinking contest Bats liver would explode long before Ma’d be slurring her words.
[sub]Just kidding, my mom’s a salt of the earth person and drinks very little. Batman would still have her spitting teeth tho’[/sub]
