So, who here saw Behind The Green Door, Deep Throat, or DIMJ at a theater?

I know there are not many here who are mature enough to have been of age to see these movies in a theater during their initial release, but I thought there might be a handful.

What I am wondering is this:

Who here, during their initial release(Deep Throat in 1972, and Behind The Green Door and The Devil In Miss Jones in 1973) saw the aforementioned porn movies in a theater?

All three of these movies were released to normal cinemas, and during the time of Porno Chic, it was trendy to go to see them.

I’m writing a paper on Porno Chic for a film class, and I thought it would be interesting to see if I could find people who went to them and find out what their experiences were.

Does a drive in count? I was in college, and the only place (well, that I knew of) that it was showing was the local drive in (the Crest). 4 of us went (my buddy Paul, his roommate Bruce -it was his car, and Bruce’s female buddy, I can’t remember her name), so it looked like a double date, but wasn’t.

We left after Deep Throat was over, didn’t stay for whatever was being shown, but as we left, the radio was on, with Roberta Flack singing “strumming my… with his fingers…” (hell, who knew the lyrics then?). That’s the total of my recollection of the event (other than some reference to “the letter H” ) so I doubt that I’ll be much help.

(and, to pick a nit, the word is ‘old’ - our relative ‘maturity’ has little to do with if we were alive and old enough to get into an ‘adult’ movie back in 1972, I know you were trying to be polite…)

Wring:

How old were you at the time? What are your memories of the movie? How did the women react to the movie?

1972 I would have been 18. (I am female by the way) I don’t recall anything about the other woman that was with us (other than that she was a platonic friend of Bruces’). My reaction?

well, I was with my buddy Paul. Paul and I have been pals since we were 6 years old, and (mostly) never approved of each other’s significant other (he used to date some incredibly shallow princess types, I dated idiots). So, the fact that I was with** him**, rather than some one I was romantically involved in, no doubt had quite a lot to do with it. I probably wouldn’t have gone w/a romantic interest, Paul and I were joking throughout most of it, so it wasn’t an ‘erotic’ situation in the least. (example, the ‘letter H’ line came from some scene where the woman was simulataneously giving and receiving, both guys were on their knees on the bed, she was on her hands and knees.) and I do remember laughing hysterically at the Roberta Flack song as we left.
That’s about all I remember… sorry.

Don’t be sorry. You’ve added a little snippet to my paper and my understanding of the climate of the time. Thank you.

I have seen all three of the aforementioned movies, not when they were originally released, but about two years after the fact when they had trickled down to the drive-in status.

I happened to have really liked The Devil In Miss Jones. It had a plot (a real rarity in porn, for those of you not familiar with it) and I found it pretty much of a turn on. Nobody gave any stellar, Academy award-winning performances, but on the whole, I really liked it. It also had a cool ending, for the time and type of film it was.

Deep Throat sucked. (Pun fully intended  ) Of course, being a female, it really wasn’t much fun to continually be subjected to men getting blow job after blow job (and her actually ORGASMING from said act…let’s be real, kids…) so I would probably be a bit prejudiced against that particular film. Of course, it didn’t help much that my date kept asking if I wanted to see if I could have an orgasm that way, but I digress…

As far as Behind the Green Door goes, it was the last one they showed that night, and I think I conked out before it had barely gotten started. Sorry…can’t remember that much about it, if anything.

Oh yeah, btw…one of the best porn flicks I have ever seen (during that time) was called The Story of Joanna. I have no idea who the star was (some really gorgeous brunette woman) but that movie was sexy as hell. Good plot (loosely based on the novel Story of O), excellent costumes and cinematography, and super erotic. I remember it was filmed in Scotland in some kind of castle, and was dubbed in English, but I really don’t remember which country the movie was from.

I wish I could find a copy of it somewhere.

Maybe I’ll just head on over to IMDb to find out if it’s available.

I, too, haven’t been much help either, but I DID at least see the movies at a theatre!

To find a porn movie on the IMDB, one has to know either the director or a name of someone who performed in the movie.

For some reason, when you type in the title of a porn movie, the site will claim it isn’t there.

Case in point:

I typed in “Devil In Miss Jones, The”.

Nothing. Claimed it had no movies by that title.

Type in Georgina Spelvin and go her filmography and there’s the link to the movie.

Same with Deep Throat and Behind The Green Door.

Well, crap. I really wanted to see that movie again, mainly to see if it was as good as I remembered it.

Surely there’s some way of finding it again. And thanks for the tip!

Also, I forgot to add, I was fifteen when I saw the above-mentioned movies. I probably shouldn’t have added BGD, since I barely remember the credits. I apologize for any misleading statements.

So, make that two out of three for me.

I went to Deep Throat. No time now, but so I don’t forget email me. I couldn’t email you.

Ouch, Hastur hits the age nerve. I think I’ll just have a glass of warm milk and go to bed.

Oh yeah. I saw all three, way back in '73. Boy, that is a long time ago. I can’t judge the quality, or how the women reacted, because I don’t remember. I was 18, and all my friends and I worried about was running into one of our fathers at the theater. It was kind of exciting, in a suburban tawdry cool sort of way.

Oh boy, I remember Green Door, in fact, it was a big annual event on our campus back in the 1970s. Every year, they showed the film on a big screen in our student union’s ballroom (yes, irony was intended). It was always packed, year after year.

The movies were a birthday gift.
Deep Throat and DIMJ were a double feature.
I believe they doubled these two in quite a few blue movie houses.

When I went to UCSD in the 70’s they showed Deep Throat once a year in the Gym. They put up huge banners for it too.

After I read Linda Lovelace’s books on her take on that film, (Book:Out of Bondage) I never wanted to watch them again.

She has a couple of books out Hastur, you might want to read them before you write that paper.

I think Linda Lovelace has become a tool of the anti-porn feminists. I don’t believe for a moment that she was forced at gunpoint to act in the movie.

Is Deep Throat available for purchase anywhere? Is it on DVD?

(BTW, Hastur, to see adult movies listed at IMDB you just have to fill out a form somewhere on the site saying you’re okay with seeing objectionable titles. It’s a bitch to find the form, but once I did and it was cookie-fied, I haven’t had any trouble seeing such titles.)

I have read and cited her first book, Ordeal, in my paper.

I don’t think she was being truthful. I think that she was recanting her past because it no longer has the glamour and allure to make her popular. Read the interviews she did during the early 70’s. I think she’s another person who got God and tried to claim that they were a victim rather than making their own choices.

Deep Throat is available on DVD. I rented it from a local video store. No extras of any sort are on the disc.

Using the old “I’m writing a paper” ploy rather than asking lascivious questions straight out, huh Hastur?

OK, back in the 70s I saw one of these (“Green Door”) and almost saw another (“Miss Jones”) in a theater on Guam. It was one of the weirdest triple bills I had ever heard of. At 10 p.m. came “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (the real one with Gene Wilder) and following that came “Behind the Green Door” and after that the “Devil in Miss Jones.”

I sat through “Wonka” and most of “Green Door” before I fell asleep. As I remember the concept was intriguing and the filming was novel (the whole idea of the non-set). But the guy with the moustache who kept walking through tossing the football totally confused me.

I am probably not a good person to quote on this because I had just spent a couple of years on a tropical island which had a very relaxed set of mores by American standards. So the concepts put out by “Green Door” and “Miss Jones” was a bit foreign.

A couple of guys I knew who were stationed on Guam decided to take me to the two films to show me a good time. I got the feeling that they enjoyed the films OK, but nothing spectacular.
