Personally i think alot of people are going to be playing expecting to be some sort of Luke Skywalker, when they realize they can only be Aunt Beru they are going to leave in droves. If i ever get a computer that can handle it i might give it a shot, hopefully me getting some money and them getting their game finished will happen soon.
Holy crap! I’m in!
I used Mozilla 1.2b instead of the crappy interface they provided, and within 5 minutes I was registered and now downloading the patch (which is going very quickly).
I’ve been trying for 5+ hours (stuck in the TOS loop) and all it took was 5 min with Mozilla.
Crap.
I’ve tried both IE and the crappy interface on and off all day. No luck either way.
I got to the credit card sign in once, but it pooped out after that. Still no luck.
I’m pissed.
Got in, finally, using IE and the direct link.
Downloading the patch now, while yelling “Dooo-do-dododoDOOOO do, do do do DOOOOO do, dudududuuuuuh” at the top of my lungs.
Mr. Athena thinks I’m nuts.
Dum-de-dum, “Creating your character, please wait”. Dooo-do-dododoooooooo…
DAMMIT, I WANT TO TAKE MY BOTHAN SCOUT OUT EXPLORING NABOO!!!
…inhale…exhale…inhale…exhale…
I’m ok. Really.
lol!
I’m Br’la on Bloodfin… Starsider wasn’t available when I logged in. FYI, if you want to change display resolutions, do it at the login screen, using the options button. If there’s a way to do it in-game, I haven’t found it yet.
I’m Lobob Pyebringer on Starsider. Feel free to send me some mail
I am sooo tempted. So, what’s being a tech like? I like being Han, ya know?
Will one of you guys (or gals) throw us a bone here? How is it?
First impressions?
Glad I didn’t pick up a copy today, looks like there full of problems. Hopefully it’s just a rocky start. Tomarrow Im gonna pick up a copy and pray things have gotten better.
From the Dev’s over at the GAT forum:
So here’s the less dressed-up version of what happened today. Short form, we’re jinxed. I say it that was because I am not exactly a hardware or database guru, so I can’t give you actual hard details on what’s going on.
First there was a hardware failure. We had not only installed more hardware than we had budgeted for any other launch, but we had dark hardware ready to go in the event of overload on the registration servers. As we saw that you were having trouble registering, we lit up the dark hardware. But it turns out that wasn’t the problem–the problem was a silent hardware failure in the device that manages the load across the web servers
And it got better. The Oracle databases underlying the servers spazzed out; they’re all down, and no logins until (estimated) 8am (pacific).
Still, the good news is that the free month won’t include release day, and I was at least able to get my character created (Kriles, Chilastra galaxy). I spent way too much time playing with the appearance modifications.
Still, it’s probably a good thing for me personally. I wouldn’t have gone to bed tonight, and I’ve got too many things to take care of at work since I’m going into a week-and-a-half of vacation around the 4th. Three guesses what I’ll end up doing (and the first two don’t count).
I managed to get through the tutorial before (like an idiot) I logged out to change display resolution. Of course, I couldn’t get back in. The server I was on went down shortly after, so I attempted to make a new character on a different server. No luck there, either - got stuck in the “Creating Character” wait from hell. As it was around 11 pm EST at that point, I decided to go to bed and get up early and play some more today.
I get up, all servers are down due to DB problems. Bah.
I gotta say, I expected this whole thing to be better. Massive problems at product launch were acceptable 3-4 years ago, when MMORPGs were in their infancy. But there have been many, many botched launches in the past couple of years, and at this point the publishers should know enough to test the @$#@ out of the registration and log in process before going live. Hint: a 6 step registration process that involves collecting 10-15 pieces of data may not have been the best way to deal with the thousands of people trying to log in at once. A simple pre-registration process available on-line a week or two before going live could have minimized the actual “live” login to one page and 3 pieces of info - station name, password, and CD key.
That’s my two cents.
Noooo… that’s like 11 AM EST. I got up early for this as well. Of course, everyone knows it’s coming back online at 11AM and there will be another bottleneck again.
First impressions.
All I did was the tutorial and then wandered around a bit. I quickly found a mission terminal and started a Fedex quest (pickup and deliver a package). There was a few other players around, and about half of them it seemed were self-designated as “Helpers”. This shows up under their names, and you can be sure they were in Beta and know the ropes. All in all they were very helpful.
I did have an interesting conversation with a wookiee, but all he could do is the wookiee growl (they can’t speak human, and we can’t understand them without spending a lot of points) so I wandered over to a NPC strolling around. When I hovered my mouse over him, it turned red. Huh? So I double-clicked. BIG mistake. This guy went on a rampage and blaster fire filled the common square. Other NPC’s and PC’s rallied to my cry of “Oh my God, I’m gonna die!!! help!!!” and jumped into the battle.
I was cut down in a matter of moments but he just incapacitiated me, so after 2 minutes I got back on my feet. Eventually the NPC was brought down and I got a screenful of faction adjustments.
Oh, and I love the speech bubbles. They really add to the atmosphere.
Boy, you guys sure are brave to buy a MMORPG the first day fo release and actually try to play it. Or you’re masochistic.
Follow RickJay’s advice: “Don’t play for ninety day, so all the bugs will go away.”
It works! I’m in… doing some missions at the moment. There’s some lag but overall looks pretty good. I like the interface, although it’s taking some getting used to. Already got “incapacitated” by a couple of Jabba’s thugs. Oh! I see BANTHAS!
Ack… are there sand people around?!?
Gotta go…
I had a productive downtime waiting for the login server to come back up. I flashed my ATI 9700 with a 9700 Pro bios and overclocked the card to Pro speeds. That brought up my 3dmark 2003 score from 3300 to 4500.
Then my WinXP died. It’s been sick lately, so I think it was just a fluke that it died today. I’m now on hour 4 of my system rebuild…
What class are you playing Athena? I started an entertainer, and I think I’m going to go for a hybrid Entertainer/Scout/Medic.
Scout at the moment. Just trying to learn the game now. I’m on the Bloodfin galaxy (I think), since Starsider seems flaky. At least, it’s never up when I look.
Look me up if you want… Br’la the wookiee scout. On Tantooine at the moment.
I ordered the game on slow delivery just so I wouldn’t be tempted to try to fight through the first throngs to get on. But the delivery tracking thing is really annoying. The threw it on the truck, through it on the plane, and it got to Denver after 8 hours of travel. My copy is now sitting in a warehouse 2 miles from my house, but it won’t be delivered for 4 days.
Argh! Fighting Urge To Buy Game!
I need to upgrade my system before even touching this sucker, but I’m so tempted to go out and buy it this weekend. I agree with the people saying give it a few months to work out the bugs.
