Was just wondering if y’all could have a permanent thread there about ‘recent thread trends that have been done to death’. Something along the lines of “if three threads about the same subject pop up it gets immortalized here”.
About a year ago I was the third or fourth or eighth person who started a thread about britannica.com (IIRC) having translations of Dennis Miller’s MNF commentary. Earlier this year it was ‘all your base’, and right now if I see one more Evil Bert thread I’m going to spit.
Well, I personally think it’s fascinating to watch all the multiple threads pop up, as the flurries of trends, crises, and flavors-of-the-week come and go. Usually everybody has a different take on it, and the ones who don’t, who post nearly identical topics–well, that’s fun, too, as you then learn a little something about your fellow Dopers.
So one vote here for “letting it all hang out”.
Besides, if you’re really worried about accidentally starting “yet another X thread”, you can always do a Search of the forum in question before you start it.
I realize that when you’ve just heard the latest hot-off-the-presses news squib about Gary Condit (remember him?), it can be difficult to rein yourself in and spend a couple minutes with that Search function first, but it Can Be Done.
