So You Think You Can Dance 5/30-1

Haven’t had a chance to watch the whole show on TiVo (Mom-in-law is temporarily in the guest room with it).

I saw the SpaceCase Boy with the cap, the SickMom Girl, Hiccup and Winky, and the Mighty Morphin Power Lucha, plus some decent other dancers. Haven’t seen the return of Hawk yet, but I’m looking forward to it. More later. In the meantime, here’s what people appended to last week’s thread to get things rolling:

Hey, has there been any mention of the girl last year who hurt herself and was invited to come directly to the Second Round?

I read on TwoP that she recently got married and had a baby, so is unlikely to make an appearance on the show, at least for this season.

I forget most of the names, so be warned that I will be using possibly crude nicknames from here on.

Most of the lyrical dancers just roll into one for me. I think I liked Tyce’s assistant, but hated Baby Oil and her spasmodic arm waving. Liked Hiccup, but didn’t like Wink. The Lindys seemed pretty good, but it’ll be interesting to see how they cope with other styles - also, she may already have a boyfriend, but he so wants her. Still, at least he doesn’t make it quite as obvious as the not-a-couple from last week.

I didn’t start watching last year until week 2 of the F20, so I never saw Hok before, but damn, that guy’s pretty awesome. As was Phillip, the popper with no bones in his arms. Saying that, I was surprised they didn’t try him in choreo first as hip-hoppers are notoriously bad at other styles, at least on this show.

Didn’t care for Lacey, Benji totally outdanced her and she didn’t come across anywhere near as likeable as him. Whereas Stanislav did everything he could to showcase Faina, there were a lot of moves there that were all about Benji and, much as I loved him last season, it’s not about him anymore.

The Arm was good, but I don’t see her making it past Vegas. The Leg has made an incredible recovery from his motorbike accident, but really did just bust out the bad boyband moves. I’m disappointed for him that he didn’t get a chance to take part in the choreo though, it would have been interesting to see just what he’s capable of on one fake leg and one broken ankle (take that, Heather Mills!)

Did they put “The Gold Inferno” through to the choreography just so they could make fun of him some more? I’ve seen better dancing in mosh pits. Also, what did Shane Sparks see in Yessie that I didn’t? I found her kind of boring and slow, especially after that montage of good hip-hop dancers.

Talking of Shane, is anyone else expecting Randy Jackson from him then get thrown when he sounds more like Paula Abdul? Everything’s rose petals and loevly with him.

Hawk was good, once again. And I loved how he had his work card ready to show! I’d really like to see how he does with a partner. I’d be willing to bet that he’ll get offered a contract somewhere whether he makes the Top 20 or not for charisma alone.

I didn’t think the judges were particularly consistent with who they sent to Vegas and who they made stay for the choreography. In the past, they sent most of the hip hop dancers to choreography to make sure they could handle it, but this time, they must have had a plethora of Vegas tickets to hand out!

And I agree with Lil’ Mahoney that most of the lyrical dancers just all blend in together in my mind. The ones that rolled around on the floor made me wonder if they did that just because they couldn’t do any other steps! Makes me wonder if I am missing some factor in my ‘rolling around’ judgement.

My sentiments exactly. The fat sissy guy was MUCH better than him.

The winking girl creeped me out. Something about her face/expressions was just kind of repulsive to me. She isn’t ugly, but she’s repulsive.

I haven’t really watched this show much before and kind of had it on in the background while packing (I’m moving tomorrow, yikes!), but I was really excited to see Mike and Evita on there. They taught at a lindy hop camp I was at a few months ago, and they are incredible dancers, really nice people, and just a whole lot of fun. I’ll certainly be cheering for them to do well!

Dang! I’d forgotten about him. I think Simon… I mean Nigel  , was exceedingly harsh to him. For a big dude, he moved quite well, I thought! Much better than a lot of the other dancers and should have at least been given credit for what he could and did do. The audience, not Nigel, was spot on.

Was this the amputee special? I have to wonder if the one-armed girl will be able to do partner dancing, isn’t there a lot of arm holding involved in many ballroom dances?

As for the guy who lost his leg, I applaud his bravery and recovery but obviously he wasn’t ready. At least he seemed well aware of that fact. It might be interesting to see what he can do in another year or so.

Hey, jumpstyle is a real thing. Go figure:

Works much better with a synchronized pair.

Whoops. Posted in the stale thread. I loved Phillip Chbeeb. Here is a link to the YouTube clip showing his audition. He made Shane cry.

So basically it’s like DDR without the video game.

Altanta tonight. The guy with scoliosis goes to my school (no, I don’t know him).

The quarterback guy was great, I thought. I’m very glad he’s going to Vegas! I hope his dad is finally proud of him for what he is doing.

Loved the clogger. However, I disagree with the judges, because I think the non-clogging stuff that he did was good too. I think the problem is that he was doing what would be considered “sexy moves” but he isn’t a “sexy guy” and so it didn’t work for them. Did he make it to Vegas?? Did they show??

The rhinestone cowboy guy… was that a speech impediment or did he have a hunka tobacco in his mouth or something?

The Marine guy… he was fun definitely. (Does it make me a bad person that that level of “southern manners” or whatever I think… well, I think it might drive me a little bonkers on a daily basis? All the sir/ma’am stuff.) Great attitude though, and seems like a truly good guy.

A very good show last night. Caitlan was probably the smoothest dancer I’ve ever seen.

Yes, he did. There was a quick flash of him jumping up and down with his ticket.

I would totally see You Got Clogged. Ha.

Quarterback Dad freaked me out. "I had the quarterback of the football team, dating a cheerleader … " Stage mom much? It was so awful the way the kid kept saying, “I’m happy you’re here to support me” and the dad couldn’t even look at him. Geez.

The scoliosis guy (Bryan?) was so much fun to watch.

There were some awesome folks from the Atlanta show! The Clogger guy left left me stunned, I have never seen clogging like that and I really hope he goes forward to the show.

Thanks for the clip of Phillip Chbeeb, I love to watch the boneless people dance.

The clogger guy was good at the clogging, and not great at the other stuff, so I doubt he’ll last long.

Beautiful, isn’t it? Did you notice all the positive feedback on the YouTube clips? Everyone is really supportive and enthusiastic towards him. David Elsewhere has been around for awhile, and is famous for the same style of fluid dance- I love his Heineken ad.

I think I teared up a bit when they offered to try to put scoliosis guy (Bryan?) in a movie that’s casting.

I don’t think the judges are necessarily mean people, they are just serving up painful truth. A career in the arts is a hard way to make a living so knowing up front that you are not really a good candidate can be a kindness. Which is not to mean you positively can’t go forward, just that you got a whole long row to hoe.

OK, I know this is a week old, but I just watched the reruns last night, and it’s my thread, dammit.

There has not been enough fanfare about Robot Boy. I rewound that sucker three times. Genius.

And why has there been no mention of Shane Sparks’ brilliant Mary Murphy impression? “Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!”

OK, I’m off to this week’s thread now.
