SoCal driving advice needed!

I need to get to Palm Springs on Sat., May 1 by 2:30 from Venice. I know how to get there. I need to know what to expect on the 10. The Coachella music festival is what concerns me the most. My plan is to leave the beach no later than 10 (because I am expecting a three to four hour ride) - do I need to leave any earlier? Any help is much appreciated.

Saturday traffic on the 10 is not too bad. Once you pass Redlands you hit a little chicken town called Yucaipa (yeah I live there) and it should be just under an hour from there.
Listen to KNX 1070 radio every so often and be prepared to take the 60 if you need to.
The last In-N-Out is San Bernardino.

What are those little chickens called?

Ah, Yucaipa…home of many, many apples.

The CHP hotline is 800 427 7623. Call it before you leave and check your route for any problems.

Ummm…ok, this is getting weird. There aren’t all that many people in Yucaipa, and here are two of them giving you directions!

I’d bump Roadwalker’s estimate by a bit. The traffic once you get down around Coachella will back up a little bit. Not much, though.

[hijack] Hey Roadwalker! How about grabbing a beer sometime? Maybe at The Royal Falconer in Redlands?

They are referred to as Chicken Nuggets. They’re a genetically bred form of poultry that KFC has engineered recently. The farm is about two miles down Live Oak Canyon road. After you get through the twisty part you’ll see a sign that says “Pig Farm.” The chicken operation is located, somewhat descreetly, just behind it. Hope this helps…

I always seem to hit these big slow downs just east of the 57, on the I-10. So I’d recommend bypassing that stretch by using the 60. There are a couple options to hop over:

  • on the Santa Monica, when you get to downtown, branch off onto the 60
  • stay on the Santa Monica until it gets to the 605, then take the 605 south to the 60 (very short distance).
I wouldn’t recommend taking the 57 down from the 10 to the 60 as you need to go on a couple city streets to catch the 60 east from the 57.

Take the 60 out to the I-15, and then head north on the I-15 to catch the 10 again.
You could also stay on the 60 (to pass through lovely Riverside), and then rejoin the 10 just before Morongo if you like. I’m not sure if it’s any longer/shorter than just taking the 10 or not.

They have great clam chowder there.

I’ll be at The community park Saturday morning with my kids and a bunch of other guys whose wives are at a retreat. I’m the one with 5 kids including a baby and a backwards black leather hat
