An item entirely overlooked so far in this discussion is that we need the government to provide a fair, honest and impartial judicial system.
Since I have been known to say a little socialism goes a long way, my contributions are all forms of insurance (it turns into a big scam when you pay into insurance for profit and they prevent you from collecting when you need it), education, police, fire, healthcare, roads, taxation and judiciary. I think that’s it.
ETA: Yeah, I think I have to add defense to my list.
Did I say “government”, myself? No, I was responding to the OP, who parenthetically said “or community in general I suppose”. I am in favour of community ownership of all the common weal. That includes business (in fact, my favourite coffee shop and restaurant are both just such places)
No, no, no, no & no.
By “personal possesions” I mean more strictly “personal property” (as opposed to real estate). Moveable property, IOW.
And no, I’m not wooshing anyone. The OP asked what I felt the community *should *cover. Not what I thought was realistic or currently attainable, but what I feel is actually good to cover. i.e. morally right.
Education, both primary & professional.
Health Care, pretty much in toto.
Maybe a Basic Income Guarantee.
