It should be emphasized that not realizing how fast you’re going depends on there not being any visible landmarks nearby. In a residential neighborhood, there will always be such visible landmarks, and so there’s no way to go that much faster than you should be without realizing it unless you’re driving with your eyes closed.
No one believes that this is anything to do with what actually happened that day. It is purely a defense strategy, that in the absence of anything more exculpatory they hoped might put enough doubt in the jurors mind, about this pretty white accused lady, to help her get off. It didn’t.

Yeah I think if her boyfriend wasn’t a rich former NFL player with very expensive lawyer he’d have been facing a murder charge too. I’ve heard of kids getting prosecuted for vehicular manslaughter when the only person who was hurt was the other kid they were street racing against.
