Help me out with the straight dope on this… was arguing with my partner…
i have some business socks from polo ralph with the logo on one side each.
I’ve always thought the socks should be worn on the outside so it can be seen - but probably not seen as pants would always cover it.
My partner says should be worn inside so when you cross your legs, the logo flashes. That’s the only time the logo can be seen and the pant leg rides high enough…
Presumably the creators want them on the outside, so they’d be seen by others in more situations. If they care enough to put their logo there, they probably want it to be shown off.
That said, I could see your wife’s believe this was less relevant.
I have some (Nike?) black foot socks that are marked “L” and “R”. I initially went out of m way to wear the “L” on my left foot and the “R” on my right. Then I tried reversing them and I couldn’t tell the difference, so now I just wear them however.
And then you have the ones with the name/logo by the toes. Hanes tend to be opposite the seam while Wigwam are at/under the seam. I always wear my seam on the underside of my toes so that defines where each of the logos end up.
Shirt logos are in the pocket position because the shirt looks bare without a pocket, which has been removed to make the shirt cheaper.
sock logos replace garters. Garters are tied on the inside, because that’s how you reach them with your legs crossed. It follows that the logo, which replaces the visible part of a garter, goes on the inside, so that your socks look more expensive.
I assume, although I’ve never checked, that ladies garters are tied on the outside, (because, like a lady’s shirt, they are done up by the lady’s maid).
Hmm could be wrong. Maybe men’s garters are done up by your valet? That wouldn’t apply to private soldiers would it? In pipe and drum bands is the garter tab worn on the outside?
