OK, so the IEEE Computer Society is pushing it’s Certified Software Development Professional Certification IEEE Computer Society CSDP Certification , which when you read about it actually seems a very good idea (test you on knowledge on how things work and can be applied, instead of focusing on some propritary standard that will change next month).
Unfortunately I have a feeling that in the real world few Hiring Managers (who I will need to impress starting summer of next year) have even heard about this certification, let alone would be impressed by it.
Could any one give me some idea of whether taking this certification test would have any tangible value, or would it be just a waste?
I’m pretty sure most managers have heard of IEEE, if not that specific certification. I think this is a good question, as I’m currently considering forking over the ~$150 to take the A+ exam. My information on that comes from an old guide published in '98 though, so it would be nice to know if I should be focusing on something more effective.
Microsoft also had a developer certification that they were pushing for a while. I haven’t heard anything about it in the last couple of years, nor have I heard about the IEEE certification.
On the other hand, anything on your resume that helps convince the guy on the other side of the table that you can do the job can’t hurt.
Thanks so far, just wondering if there are any comments (especially from those who do hiring or in management).
I’ve hired hundreds of software engineers, have done plenty of software engineering, and have done plenty of software engineering management. I’ve never heard of this certification.
I’ll also tell you that certifications don’t do much for me in general. They’re not bad, but just don’t hold a candle to actual experience. That’s just my opinion though; certainly there are hiring managers out there who enjoy seeing certifications.
Thanks Bill, that was what I was thinking (fearing) - that people will not value this certification much, since it’s not a well know one such as A+ or MCSE etc.
Although I do agree with the previous posters that having it won’t hurt, I sort of have to plan (read budget) what certifications, if any, I should aim for.
Although it still seems like a good idea, but too many good ideas have died from lack of interest.
