I would like to upload about 75 images to the web for public viewing. Those images, though, are 1164x864 in resolution. I’d like to shrink them down to a more download friendly size, say 800x600. Is there software that can do this quickly?
If you have Windows XP, there’s a “Cool Tool” that allows you to do this. Once installed it just becomes an option when you right click on an image/group thereof.
No new suggestions - I run Gallery, which uses the above mentioned ImageMagick for file conversion.
I can also recommend Irfanview if you’ve just got the Windows platform.
I think the Gimp can also do resizing, but note that you’ll lose any exif info if you do. (Digital camera model/settings, timestamp, etc. etc.). ImageMagick keeps it intact… dunno what anything else does.
Photoshop can do it, although if you don’t already have the program it would be a rather expensive option if all you wanted to do was resize the images.
Note that making the images really download-friendly might involve not only reducing the resolution (i.e. the dimensions, in pixels), but also increasing the compression ratio of the jpegs.
For example, in photoshop a 600x450pixel picture that takes up 500kb when compressed at jpeg level 12 might only take up 280kb when compressed at level 10, with no observable difference in quality when viewed on the screen.
I can vouch for this one. My favourite graphics viewer, not the least because it is completely free. It has some marvellous functions buit-in! And it can make a good stab at displaying anything, not just images!
I second (ok, third) the IrfanView suggestion. Very easy to use, free and often patched graphics program taking very little system resources. Photoshop or PSP certainly aren’t worth it if you just need to resize/convert images. And for image editing there is the GIMP, also free.
