If you truly cannot understand that this is precisely the sort of incident that happens in war, that it is unlikely to have happened without a war, and that the needless war was an infinitely worse thing than this single incident from the war, then I doubt that I can explain it to you.

My sister-in-law’s brother was in that division. Luckily he wasn’t there to be hurt (he was very ill), but I still hope they off that fucker soon. The scum doesn’t deserve to live another day.
He won’t be executed. The military has not executed anyone since 1961, and that includes Lt. William Calley for his ordering and participation in the My Lai massacre.
Also, this is a political war, and I think the sentence will be put down to life without parole because he IS Muslim, and given that others have committed crimes more heinous than this they can try to make a case that he’s being executed because of his religion and/or beliefs. With the way things are going the military cannot afford that reputation.
That said, I think he’s scum. That could have been me that he killed. I think he deserves the death penalty, and I think you’re right that there wouldn’t be any trouble finding someone to do it, but I just don’t think it’s going to happen.
