(Some) Cyclists, I am really getting sick of your shit

And it will never be the case because of people who do their best to discourage non-drivers, like you.

Please refer to post #140.

I’m riding my bike. I will do so in the most courteous manner possible. That said, I will not risk my safety to save drivers a handful of seconds.

That is my basic assumption.

Really? Because I recall just recently reading a lament from a cyclist that city planners don’t take bicycles into consideration when they design their street layouts. I mean, if the streets were designed for bicycles, you’d think they’d install traffic light sensors that could detect a bicycle. Or figure out a way for cyclists to make a left turn without breaking the law or putting their lives at risk. From the way you and the other cyclists have been complaining, it sure doesn’t sound like the roads were built for bicycles. It sounds more like they were built with a specific type of vehicle in mind: cars.

I don’t catch the gist of this, Sauron, but are you implying its my fault?

You might note that many of the posts I referred to previously were made before I even showed up on this thread.

You have a basic misunderstanding of the difference between what something is ‘built for’ and what it is ‘designed for’.

Roads are intended to be used by both cars and bicycles. Just not very well designed. Is that clear enough?

The cars get the priority. Most definitely. Most people use them and the infrastructure is built for them. Interference from other vehicles should be minimized for the sake of the safety of the greatest number of people. Bicycles should probably only be allowed in bike lanes. They should not be allowed at all on roads that have a certain speed limit or greater (I don’t know, but I’d think something like 50 mph or so.)

That’s probably the safest and most efficient possible way to do it (with the philosophy that bike lanes should be installed in the greatest possible number of situations.)

I’m perfectly aware that’s your assumption. “Everybody else can lump it.”

Absolutely clear: the roads were intended for bicycles, but were built for cars. Which is precisely what I said in the first place. I’m glad to see that I was able to talk you around to my point of view on this subject.

Asshole motorists create threats to public safety at a rate several orders of magnitude greater than do asshole cyclists. I will be more impressed with the argument against cyclists on public roads when this is acknowledged by those making said argument. Perhaps a neat solution to the problem would be helpful, as well. You know, like this one :

And I’m glad you understand that roads are intended for bicycles. I’ll continue to use the roads for their intended purpose, despite some minor faults with the implementation.

Wow. You’re disgusting. You take my basic concern for my own safety and twist into some kind of act of arrogant selfishness. What a prize you are.

I guess I learned a valuable lesson today. Cycling threads on the SDMB are destined to be ugly.

Then what’s stopping you from finding a different route, since you’re the one bothered by the situation? Why is it always up to someone else to maximize your convenience?

 Uh huh. I’m not the one slinging dipshitted insults at someone I don’t know, Chief Flies Off The Handle.

<emphasis added>

You have one of the worst cases of projection I have ever seen on the internet.

“Where drivers stare at bicyclists who are laughing at the walkers” (with apologies to David Allan Coe).

Now you’re a psychologist? Good god, son. Stop wasting my time.

Yes they are.
Cyclist here. I don’t commute by bike, I ride for for exercise. So taking a car is not really a good option to improve my cardiac health.
Di I hate cyclists that run stop signs? You bet.
Do I hate cyclists that ride on the wrong side of the road? Yup.
Do I hate cyclists that ride on sidewalks? Them too.
Now about me.
Do I run stop signs? No.
Do I ride on the wrong side of the road? No.
Do I ride on sidewalks? Never.
Do I ride following the rules of the road set out by the laws of the state I live in? Yes, with one exception.
Do I run red lights? No, with one exception. BTW I have a major complaint about red lights. My cycling superpower is I have the ability to change a red light to green just by unclipping my right foot and putting it on the ground. I see a red light and look forward to it as a chance to catch my breath, then I unclip and 3 seconds after my foot hits the ground the damn light is green again. :smack: Fuck can’t we get some longer damn red lights in this town?
The exception? There is a training ride I do on Saturdays and Sundays. There is one intersection where it is a four way signal controlled intersection. I arrive heading North and I need to turn left to head West. The left turn signal is on a demand controlled sensor. The road North of the intersection goes up a very steep hill and is divided. I have sat at that intersection for upwards of three minutes early on a Saturday morning and never got a green arrow. During that time a car did come from the East, the light cycled for him to go, the back to green for the N/S traffic, but no love for the left turners.
So now I pull up in the left turn lane, come to a complete stop and look in all directions. If any traffic is coming I just sit it out and let them go by, then when traffic is clear, I run the damn light. I am guessing you would do the exact same thing if your car did not trip the sensor.
Now if the lawless manner in which I ride bugs you, I will bet that you break more traffic laws driving than I do riding. So my response is deal with it.

By the way, getting back to the sensor light issue, I took this photo on the way home today. Taken from the straight-through lane waiting to cross a major 6-lane road. You can clearly see the sensors on the road. There is no pedestrian crossing or pedestrian lights, and no button.

One does not need to be a psychologist to see your pathetic attempts to cover your own selfish nature by accusing others of being inconsiderate.

You complain when people, namely bicyclists, will not alter their entire lifestyle in order to placate some need of yours not to be slowed down when driving your car for even a second.

You insist that others drastically change their legitimate safety habits in order to accommodate a ‘safety problem’ that exists entirely in your mind.

When people won’t change to the unsafe ways you want them to do things in order to placate your interests you have the nerve to call them selfish.

Your ‘solutions’ involve dangerous ghettoization, and further restrictions on bicyclists to solve a problem that you have tried to make into a ‘safety issue’ as a cover for your real interests: You want bikes off the roads.
