Some of my Amazon downloads are missing...

I have downloaded a variety of MP3 files (mostly freebies) using the Amazon downloader and imported them into Itunes.

For some reason the songs, after initially appearing in my library and playing fine, eventually are identified by the software as files that cannot be located, and a (!) appears next to the file name. I can recover and re-import the files, but they keep vanishing unless I convert them to AAC files, whereupon they remain indefinitely.

It doesn’t matter if my Itunes import setting is on 128 bps, 256 or Itunes Plus (the Amazon files generally are 228 or 256 bps).

Any idea why this seeming incompatibility occurs, and how I can preserve the higher bps rate files in my Itunes library?
