Every review of this movie that I have seen says something about how Steve Zahn’s character does something completely unforgivable, but he makes the character likable. One (in the City Pages in St Paul) says something like, “The character is portrayed amazingly with help and deep generosity from the author. Donofrio forgives her husband for doing something damn near unforgivable.”
What does he do? I know he is a drug addict, but is that really all that unforgivable? I don’t think so. If I do see this movie (and strangely enough, the more bad reviews of it, the more I want to see it), I’m waiting until it comes to a $1.50 theater, and that’s gonna be awhile.
Someone tell me what ehe does that is so bad.
It’s really just the drug addiction. He hides the fact that he’s using, then when she finds out it prevents her from going to California and college (supposedly), and when she tries to get him clean he sneaks out. When he comes back she asks him to leave.
He also, before that, forgets that he’s supposed to watch their son while she goes for a scholarship interview, so she takes the little boy with her and loses the scholarship. I don’t know if that’s the unforgivable thing people are talking about.
If you do see the movie, keep in mind that although it has comic aspects, it’s a drama. There are parts that are not fun to watch.
Oh yeah–I figured it would actually be pretty heavy and depressing, even though the previews make it look really wacky.
yeah, i sobbed. i never cry at movies, not even braveheart, but i cried off and on throughout the entire movie. it hit close to home, maybe.
i liked it a lot, though. it lacked cheesiness and drew’s character was for once different.
Here’s the best composite site for reviews.

If you like spoilers, always to to Ebert first. He’s quite happy to give away anything, including the last scene.
He thinks he’s leading a discussion of filmmaking for students who have already seen the movie and don’t know how to analyze it. Great for famous oldies, death for any movie where surprise is part of the enjoyment.
