Someone explain KGB (information service) to me

Recently I have seen ads for a text service called KGB. For 99 cents you can ask them a question and get it answered via text messaging (I believe that’s how it’s supposed to work, anyway).

What I am wondering is, who the hell would actually use this service, the seven or eight remaining human beings who haven’t yet heard of Google (which, of course, is free)? What could this service do that a typical web search could not? Maybe some people still do not have Internet access, but these days, not having access is more the exception, not the rule.

And what if they either cannot answer your question or answer it incorrectly or incompletely, or cannot answer it at all? Do they still charge you 99 cents?

EDA: I posted this in IMHO because I wasn’t sure if GQ was the right fit for it. If the mods deem a move necessary, I’ll understand.

Why are you asking this question when you have internet access and can presumably Google it?

The company predates Google, and seems willing to tackle any question thrown at it - their UK subsidiary released a book compendium of many of the stranger questions and answers.

This seems to resemble a business model of some others around here - I just can’t for the life of me remember who.

What I can’t figure out is whether they actually named the service after the Russian intelligence agency or if they were completely unaware of it.

Bar bets.

What I don’t understand is why you’d use KGB instead of the identical, but free, Cha-Cha.

Sometimes I do find myself out and about with only my basic cell phone (you know, JUST for calls, texts and photos) and need to know the answer to something. Usually I call or text my brother - for free - but I can see someone being willing to pay 99 cents for an answer to a question that’s just burning on their brain.

This is what I mainly use my iPhone for. I’ll be out want to know the answer to a random question, this weekend it was the scoville units of Jalapenos, I pull out my phone and google it. Not sure I’d want to pay by the question though that could get expensive.

Call the library - we answer bar bet questions all the time.

Either your library has AWESOME hours, or your drinkers are early birds.

Probably the latter. I’d never thought about that before.
