Someone has stolen personal info - from this board!

If your post was made in the hopes of shaming the guilty party then I think you are going to be disappointed. The culprit must have been well aware that sharing that information was going to upset you, and they did it anyway.

I can’t imagine what you think the police could do. No crimes have been committed… well, you might be able to make a case for copyright violation, for all the good it would do you. I think the police would suggest you don’t use your personal account in the classroom, or alternatively don’t use your classroom account to post personal information. Sorry that you had to learn this lesson the hard way.

Nobody stole information. They did however post printouts in public of material that the board and poster did not give permission to use like this. It went beyond a reasonable use.

That’s right. You can now get the SDMB to sue them for copyright infringement!

$200,000 or so per work! You could bankrupt the kid’s family!

The best part is you can sue any kid that has a copy. Either they have to give the source or admit to the copying themselves.

What that kid did… it’s the sort of thing they’re going to carry with them for quite a while. I’m sure it will take a few years to realize how malicious and fucked up it was to do that, but it’ll happen (assuming this kid actually grows up a little).

But yeah, lesson in the dangers of posting anything online.

This is precisely why I only rarely tell people about the dope and almost never reveal my username.

You’re a teacher? How were you able to get through teacher college without doing simple stuff like putting question marks where they belong, and so on? What do you teach?

It was this two-year-old post that humiliated you, I assume?

Does he even own the copyright to material posted here? I thought it became property of SDMB/Chicago Reader/someone else. So suppose one did create a wonderful poem on here and someone stole it and put it in a book. Would they have to get permission from the board owners in order to sue?

I just can’t believe you had the SDMB open on your classroom computer and allowed kids to see it. That’s totally inappropriate. This board contains large amounts of adult-oriented material.

While I do think that the boards are fine for many teens, it’s up to the parents to decide what sites their children should have access to. And if the kids read the site without permission, so be it. But a schoolteacher shouldn’t be showing this site to random kids!

Well, good luck keeping your job.

Copyright of SDMB posts is shared between the Board and the poster. It’s an interesting question as to whether a post on the SDMB being printed, copied, and taped up around a school is any more a copyright violation that doing the same with a newspaper article.

This is not a criminal issue that I can see. My principal was sure that the police could determine who accessed what and when on this site. I am doubtful that they would bother or whether they would have the resources.

Same here. The only time I revealed it was when I met a Doper IRL randomly.

Solkoe, I taught (US History, World Geography) at an alternative H.S. for 6 years, and mentioned a thing or two in passing that a few students seemed to find incriminating (once told a couple of my kids I was flying to Germany and the Netherlands for vacation, which I figured was innocent enough; I didnt figure on them knowing anything about Amsterdam!)
Anyways, it was of course really no big deal, but I always tried to keep my personal life very separate from my teaching life—I saw nothing good coming by sharing personal info with students, including what I read, listen to or watch in the theater. Other teachers felt differently, but that is certainly thier call.
Anyways, just out of curiousity, why would your students finding about your divorce be a problem?

What am I missing?

Finally, I hope this hasnt been too stressful for you, this country needs all the qualified educators we can get, and I bet you are a great asset to your school!!!

Matthew

I will keep my job fine thank you.

While this site contains adult material, none of it enters my classroom.
I also use video clips from sites that have libraries full of inappropriate stuff.
I don’t understand your point unless you think I give them free reign to explore this site without guidance.

Thanks for all your comments.

I appreciate hearing from both sides.

I will continue to use my present username with greater discretion. At least I not having sex with dogs or anything. It was a bit of shock when I found out. Some parents knew before me. It is part of the job I know but my family is also involved.

The student who posted that info in the school erred in judgement.

I will create a second username for classroom use.

You will? Have you read the rules here?

You are only allowed one username here. And people still know this original one so even if you did create a new one for the classroom there’s still linkage.

I don’t understand what you mean by classroom use either. Are you handing out assignments and then browsing the board? Are you pulling up threads and reading responses as part of classroom learning?

I have never understood why people would browse this message board while at work. I always assume that there is someone in the IT department watching and reading everything on my screen. If I can’t provide a darned good explanation for what’s on there, I would expect disciplinary action up to and including being fired. But maybe my job is different.

How, precisely, did the student err? The student disseminated publically available information that you made known to your class.

I’ve got no sympathy for you. None. You’re the one who erred in judgement.

SDMB registration agreement

I know this situation is irritating, but don’t do anything to get yourself banned.

On second thought, I’ll hold back–it ain’t a Pit thread.
