Someone's been tampering with my mail.

I’m not pissed off enough anymore to make this a Pit thread, but I had to get this off my chest. I think someone tampered with my mail. I got a 1099 from my investment company, and the enveloped had been slit open with something sharp and taped back shut. I called the banking place (it’s quite small - small enough for them to remember who I am), and they said that they remembered sending it out, and at the time, it had been shut properly. So there’s a good possibility that some yahoo out there has my social security number of federal ID number. Grrr…

Anyway, I may be overreacting, but I’ve ordered a monthly credit check on myself, and will probably switch my bank because my husband’s bank offers an even more in-depth credit check that reports all bank accounts opened in your name, plus credit cards and other loans, and mine doesn’t.

Has anybody here had a problem with identity theft, and how did you deal with it?

overlyverbose I’ve never had this happen but you’re right in getting a credit check and being suspicious. This sucks. I hope everything is ok.

The Social security Administration has a page on their website with links to information on preventing, reporting and recovering from identity theft.

Thanks for the link, Q.E.D.. And thanks for your kind wishes, swampbear. I really appreciate both.

You should definitely be taking all the precautions you’re taking, to try to protect yourself.

However, there is a small possibility that the envelope was delivered to someone else & they opened it by mistake then taped it up. I’ve accidentally opened neighbor’s mail before realizing it wasn’t mine. Of course, I’ll put a note on it when I put it in the right mailbox.

Good luck!!
