Just saw this old file I wrote years ago when I found it fun to express my anti-religious views to the faithful. Funny how I still hold it all 100% true, but have become less mouthy. Enjoy…
Generally I would say a story by the likes of Mother Goose or the Brothers Grim is an accrate comparasin to any form of religion. Only difference being when fairy tales are told to children the result is not fear of eternity in a very uncomfortable place. Also, the child knows
M. Goose is “telling a story”, too bad he didn’t know this was the case with whats preached to him as well. Gnerally spewing out prooven scientific facts in order to discount religion has been done to death, but did I really hear some one above say, “I truly believe in Noah’s Ark, and Adam and Eve.”? Just when you think SOME things are understood by all as being wrong, another believer stands up. Do I really need to point out the near infinite species of insects alone that awaited Noah and his tweesers? When have you ever seen such a boat that could stay afloat with two of every dinosaur? Sorry Spielberg, my faith wont allow Dinosaurs, cool special effects though… And as for Adam and Eve, where shall I begin? Is it really so bad to know our ancestors were monkeys? Chromosonal science alone lays those doubts to rest. Not to mention the insecive amounts of inbreeding that are to follow. Talk about forbidden fruit! Apparently God has buckled down on his stance against polygamy, incest and intercourse with ones own young since the days of the Garden. Hell, X amounts of inbread generations that led us to the year 2000, would have made Helen Keller a functioning miracle! “Nessecity is the mother of invention.” Granted, our less intellagent ancestors needed some answers, so they INVENTED them. Well, how much better do our new and logical answers have to be before we can let go of old folklore? All I ask now is, “When does blind faith become utter ignorance?” I know its hard to think maybe nobody truly loves you, or that you may never see your spouse or parent or dog again. Or that maybe as rotten as you think your time on Earth is, that may just be all the time you have; ever. Did you ever think, in detail, what Heaven is? Paradise yes, warm weather, no worries, and my favorite part: You’ll know all of lifes mysteries once you reach heaven. What would you do with yourself all day? No thirst for knowledge, no problems to solve, never again would you feel a sence of accomplishment because all your worries have been erased. Sounds kind of like a vacation to me. Only its not for the week of the 4th but for all eternity. In the simplest terms I can come up with to describe Heaven: Uneventful, unrewarding and boring! For me, my “choice of eternity” is almost a toss-up between heaven and hell? Cant decide…
First of all, I wrote this all 4 years ago, and second… I still believe every word of it. And yes, If it wasnt obvious, Im am an athiest. Any possitive comments?
Kinda like a ramble…a little structure would be nice. Other than that, pretty interesting. That’s a euphemism for “Hmm…but I still wouldn’t say that in mixed company.”
Exactlly! It was a ramble from my “less mature” days. I longer spout such insensitivity aloud anymore, I ust thought it would be fun to post and be disected here…
I am aware of the clientle here and I also know there are many athiests here. And as for stirring up trouble… Thus, the great debates forum. And as for my punctuation… God didnt make me, so Im not perfect…
You said that you wrote this when you were “mouthy”, and also said that you do not “spout such insensitivity aloud anymore”. And I just found that an amusing statement, seeing as you posted this on a veryPublic Internet Message Board.
No mention from me about “stirring up trouble”. Everyone here “stirs up trouble”.
In the OP, he said he used to find it FUN to state his beliefs to the faithful. He did NOT say that he states them here in order to have fun. So, screw THAT argument.
This IS, after all, the Great Debates forum.
All that I feel needs to be said about THAT. MetropoChris, I only got about halfway through your text. I agree about needing punctuation.
I also agree with your view about mythology. Now, I was raised Christian and I state myself to be a Christian because I believe in the tenets put forward by Christ as far as how we should act towards each other, etc. However, I do acknowledge that religion is myth. Myths might be based on history; however, myth is myth. We all too often speak about other religions in such ways. How many of us have read books on Greek, Roman or Native American mythology? Of those of us who are Christian and have read them, how many would get VERY angry if someone turned around and wrote a book on Christianity’s “Jesus myths”?
I don’t believe that the fact that religion is based on myth should make that much of a difference as to applying its tenets in everyday life; I do this quite well without believing in the literal sense of the myths. Maybe I’m not a “good Christian” but that’s just my opinion in this DEBATE.
Who brought up that argument? Who brought up “fun”? I mentioned that I thought it was amusing that he said that years ago he expressed his anti-religious views to the faithful. (For “fun” or not, it doesn’t matter to me.) And I am wondering, what does he think he is doing here, right now, on this very public message board?
Also, he said:
Oh, yeah, he does mention that he thought it would be fun* to post it here… And once again, I find it amusing that he says he doesn’t spout such “insensitivity” anymore. But here he is, posting “such insensitivity” on this public message board, right here, right now! Amusing…
Gee. I would have never known this was the Great Debates forum if you hadn’t pointed it out…
I never said I thought he shouldn’t express his anti-religious viewpoints. This is the Great Debates, after all! And, as Freedom2 is counting on, “Everyone here stirs up trouble.”
