Something wrong in Die Hard With a Vengeance

Many things, actually. Such as the ability to survive huge explosions just by jumping right ahead of them. But that’s not what I’m concerned with here. Oh, yeah, various pieces of the plot may be revealed in the following, so don’t read on if you plan on watching it for the plot.

We all know the basic plan of the bad guys’ strategy, right? Steal several billion dollars worth of gold from the Federal Reserve Bank, near Wall Street, and transport it by dump truck on FDR Drive uptown. Somewhere uptown, but still in Manhattan, enter an unused water main. Travel north, towards the Catskills. Leave the water main somewhere along the way (can’t remember where they said it comes out).

Somewhere after the tunnel, there are docks where you load the gold from the dump trucks on to a cargo ship. Except, of course that you really don’t (and now that I think about it, this is done in an amazingly short time). Travel in this ship for a bit, and then blow it up. Meet up with the dump trucks in Canada. At some point after leaving the tunnel, you will be crossing a bridge with a toll of $2.50, at least for dump trucks. I’m guessing the Tappan Zee.

This sounds all good in theory. However, the movie clearly says that the ship is blown up in Long Island Sound. Longgisland Sound [remember the accent this time]? How the hell did the ship get there? Is there something I’m missing? Were they on the ship long enough to get there?

You say they’re going North in the water main, well, Long Island Sound is northeast of Manhatten. My guess would be the ship starts in the sound or near the top of the East River and sail north.

I’m pretty sure they take the water main all the way out of Manhattan. From what I recall, they enter it pretty far north, like 117th St. The water main would, if anything, veer west as it heads toward the Catskills.

Hmmmmm…good point. Well, LIS extends pretty far north of Manhattan, my bet is they come out of the water main before the catskills, ie, somewhere in Westchester, and drive east until they get to the sound. Remember, LIS is everything between Long Island and the mainland.

But they go under a bridge, providing Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson the chance to get on the ship. That bridge would have to be either Throg’s Neck or Bronx-Whitestone then. Heading west towards Manhattan is dumb, as is driving back into south Bronx and then heading east. Not to mention that Bruce guessed where they were going, and nobody would guess that a bunch of dump trucks in Westchester county would offload their cargo to a ship they could catch up with on the Throg’s Neck Bridge.

The only thing I can think of is that they got out of the tunnel in the Bronx, and met up at one of the Harlem River bridges. But I’m pretty sure they specify a location north of the city as the tunnel exit, though. Or perhaps they’re on the ship (off-camera) long enough to sail from the Tappan Zee into the LIS. That seems like it would take forever, though. On the other hand, it would give the dumptrucks ample time to get to Canada. Not the leader guy, though.

Ahh, well, I forgot about the bridge part. I give up.

Um, Water? This is a Bruce Willis action movie we’re talking about here.

A Bruce Willis action movie. Written by a Hollywood screenwriter.

You should be glad they got Long Island Sound on the same coast as Manhattan, let alone close enough to walk there.

You need to get out of the house more, babe.

[going to check my tape of Wizard of Oz to make sure they got the Emerald City in the right place*]

Yes. The continuity was as stupid as the movie.
